^ Yes, but the sound quality is horrendous.

Go here http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=72484&PID=4786281#4786281 and download the whole show (1973/08/21), which is soundboard quality. There's some other nice shows in that download link.

Yes...that was another pretty obvious difference. And I still prefer the version of IMBAC on the remixed version. I probably haven't listened to it enough yet to get that mystery vibe.

Did i see you mention on another thread that you're in atlanta?  we may have already gone through this.
Yeah!  Remember the Rush show last year?  We talked via PM after I posted a review of the show, and I think you were at the show too.Cool

Sorry.  Yeah, I remember that as soon as I posted and was to lazy to come back and editBig smile

Hope all is well.  Any prog shows tho summer?  I'm toying with see in Yes.  I wish Zappa Plays Zappa came around again.

Also, anyone know anything about that Zappa offshoot called Project Object that played around in the early 00s?

And, I'm intrigued by this new 2012 Hot Rats.  I didn't know any of the re-releases were remixed/remastered.

And again...my son thinks Yellow Snow is hilarious.  I'm starting him early, so he'll be into all the obscure stuff by junior high and blow his friends away.  Wink

No shows lined up at the moment, though I did go see Steven Wilson about a month ago at the Variety Playhouse, that was nice.

Project Object's leader is actually a friend of mine.  They just finished a tour in fact, but didn't come through Atlanta.  I had a thread going to try and drum up some interest here.  From what I've heard, the tour, which extended to Europe, was quite successful.  This time around, in addition to Ike Willis, they had Ray White, Denny Walley, Ed Mann, and Tom Fowler -- quite an historic lineup!  Here's the thread, with some pictures from the tour:

And as for the 2012 reissue series, as I understand it, they're going back to the original vinyl mixes for the most part, bringing back the albums as originally released.  I've only gotten Hot Rats so far.

Zumacraig, check out this link, it has all the info on the 2012 reissues.
http://lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/2012hotpoop.html

That site in general, is very informative.

Basically, if you have the RYKO CD versions of Zappa's albums, you need these albums:
Album Title Why It's Necessary
Absolutely Free New remaster; no reverb, no mock stereo.
Hot Rats Original vinyl mix, vastly different from all other CDs (which you should keep)
Burnt Weeny Sandwich New master, no digital reverb, better sound.
Weasels Ripped My Flesh New master, no reverb or right-channel glitches, but old CD has extended versions
Chunga's Revenge New master, no digital reverb, no glitches, WAY better sound.
Fillmore East, 1971 New master, no reverb/glitches, WILLIE PART 2!
Just Another Band from LA Reverts to the vinyl version (not everyone is thrilled, though)
Waka/Jawaka No more reverb, sounds better.
The Grand Wazoo No more reverb or exxagerated treble, sounds better. Some copies are defective, though; be careful.
Over-Nite Sensation New master, no digital reverb.
Apostrophe New master, LP version, no digital reverb. Probably optional for Au20 owners.
One Size Fits All New master, no digital reverb. Probably optional for Au20 owners.
Bongo Fury New master, no digital reverb. Some aren't quite pleased with the result, but it is still an upgrade from the previous edition.
Zoot Allures New master, no reverb, FINALLY sounds good.
Studio Tan New master. Keep your old disc for the Greggery remix.
Sleep Dirt Reverts to the instrumental vinyl version. Keep your old disc for the vocals.
Sheik Yerbouti New master, no glitches or weird edits. Essential.
Tinsel-town Rebellion Sounds as good as the 1998 Ryko, but with odd segues eliminated.
Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Reported to be a sound quality upgrade, and eliminates the crossfade before "Stucco Homes."
You Are What You Is Sounds as good as the 1998 Ryko, but with "Dumb All Over" edit eliminated.
Them or Us No more right-channel glitches, but keep your old disc for the extended title track.
(Joe's Garage is recommended, but is not currently regarded as necessary as the above)

-----------------------

I don't agree with what he says about Joe's Garage, it's a very big improvement in the sound department, as I always thought the drums and bass were mixed too low on the older CD versions, and the new one has a fuller sound. Plus, the 2012 Joe's Garage uses a slightly different version of the title track, so it's definitely recommended.

He also recommends you hang onto the old versions of Hot Rats, Weasels, Apostrophe ('), Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, Joe's Garage, and Them or Us if you have the old CD versions, as they are a bit different in one way or another, even though all the reissues sound better.

Also, I'm currently on the hunt for the EMI version of The Man From Utopia, which is the vinyl mix, and very different from all other CD versions, including the 2012 UMe one. The exception is Moggio, which is still remixed, and the only way to hear it is from the actual vinyl. I wonder why UMe didn't issue that version, though I guess they didn't because they would have to omit the Luigi and the Wise Guys song.

I have Man from Utopia on vinyl, it was one of the few albums in print when I was first getting into FZ.  It is indeed a quite different album from the CD version.  I still am not sure what to think of "Luigi", it feels like it doesn't belong!  I think I remember now how a couple of EMI FZ CDs got out before the Ryko deal went through -- "Does Humor Belong in Music" was the first FZ CD to appear, and I got it on EMI.  I wasn't aware that Man From Utopia also had an EMI issue back then.

That checklist/table is making me think I'm missing a lot.  But I don't know if I can stand buying these albums again.  I'm already kinda tired of most of them by now.  I guess eventually I'll get back in a serious FZ kick.

How much different is Moggio from the vinyl compared to the CD version? Apparently, the EMI still has the remixed Moggio.

The 2012 reissues threw me back into the FZ world big time, after being away from it for the better part of 5 years.

I'll have to give the LP another listen next to the CD, it's been a long time since I played it.  I don't recall any glaring differences in Moggio offhand, though.

Cool pics!  I hadn't seen most of those.

By the way, I believe the guy next to Frank on the tenor sax in this picture is Motorhead Sherwood.

Thanks for posting, these are some great shots I've never seen before.  I thought the most amusing was the "MBER STAFF".  Is that his high school yearbook committee picture?  I was always under the impression he didn't do any extra curricular volunteer HS activities.  I recall reading somewhere (the Barry Miles biography, liner notes from The Lost Episodes, ???) that during a HS assembly speech some classmate specifically said something like, "and we expect everybody to be there, even you Frank Zappa" to which he replied "f you very much" to the entire assembly.  Anyone else run across that story?

I remember reading about that in "The Real Frank Zappa Book". Maybe he did the extracurricular activities, but nothing worthwhile happened that would make Frank want to talk about it.

Holy sh*t! Philly 76 is great!!! I didn't expect it to be so good. I remember panning it when it came out, and thought something like "oh, another late 70s live album, more versions of Stinkfoot, Black Napkins, City of Tiny Lights, etc... blah blah blah

How wrong I was. The band is kinda funkier than usual, not that this band was ever the 73/74 bands, but this one grooves more than Zappa New York or Hammersmith Odeon.
