Good news, Pierre?! How about the BEST news?!
I don't have an original copy of any of their albums, even though I've heard `Celeste' on Youtube quite a lot and know how special it is. This boxset will be the perfect opportunity to get those three works in the one place! |

There is a thing I don't understand. I don't see the second album in the boxset.

It's in there, Pierre. Disc 3 is Celeste II aka Second Plus. The disc also contains the english demos for "Prince of One Day."
Principe Di Un Giorno is my all time favorite album of all time. RPI or otherwise. Michael you NEED this!!!

Thanks for clearing up the matter of the `missing album', Coaster!
I plan on grabbing this when Syn-phonic gets it in stock, yet another gap in the collection to fill! (a gap that never ends, it seems... ) |

Listening to Emmanuel Booz right now, but I think my hung over head needs some Italian loving next
It's been a while since I last visited this little gem:

Good one, Dave. Too bad, the songs are so short ...

Some short things are cool though, like short shorts or shortcuts.

Sorry for no reply until now, Dave, just been thinking about what you had to say and working out some questions and opinions to offer back! I know what you mean about `imperfections' and nuances that become such a special part of some of those vintage albums! Albums like, say for instance, Il Biglietto, Rustichelli & Bordini and the recently mentioned Rocky's Filj all have such a rough charm and manicial energy! Thing is, I doubt those artists set out to purposely make their albums sounds so rough-around-the-edges! . I mean, I highly doubt the guys from Soft Machine, while recording `Third' were sitting around the table saying `You know what...what we need is to make an album that sounds like it was recorded in a f**king toilet' lol! So of course over the years all our favourite albums have revealed all those low-fi and murky characteristics that we come to love, But I wonder if a lot of them were all happy accidents? I recall a vague qoute from...someone, I seem to think it was something/someone to do with Yes...pretty sure it was in that `Prog' magazine, and they said `What people don't understand is that we never set out to record those albums that way, we were simply making do with the inferior equipment and production techniques we had on offer at the time...'. Damn, really wish I could track that proper quote down. Anyway, I'm sure I had a point in there somewhere, but it's now 2am and I'm not very focused or coherent any more, but I hope you understand where I was coming from! I'm not going to deny it, I've kind of just trailed off... Dave, I hope you might eventually come across some newer RPI titles that win you over, I think there's been an endless string of killer titles from both new and vintage comeback acts that have so much to offer! I won't lie, my friend, we're talking serious `six to midnight' excitement action down below from me, so hopefully you'll sense a stirring sooner than later as well! Don't sweat it Mike I am however really chuffed that you took the time to post back. As you know, I'm a big fan of wandering off - both musically and lyrically, so that just makes for a far more interesting post my friend I've read similar quotes from musicians wishing they could go back in time with a modern soundboard Uhhh that gives me goosebumps in a creepy way.... The studio is many things though. Some use it as an additional band member, while others just throw a couple of mics in a room and be done with it. My point is that it's critical to know which one you're applying to your music - and why. Here are some relatively new albums I really dig, just to show that I love both sides of the fence: Dead Can Dance - Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun (Recorded in an ice cathedral. Soooo cold it's creepy) Steve Wilson - Insurgents (Over the top fiddly production wise, but amazing) Dungen - Pick any album (Hey welcome to 1971!) NIL - Nil Novo Sub Sole (Metallic loud and clean like a samurai sword - but it works) Amorphous Androgynous - Pick any album (The continuation of The Future Sound Of London. This is one of the only examples that successfully merges new and old. IDM meets 1969)

One thing to consider... The original Vinyl Magic CD of Celeste's first album is one of the most beautiful sounding CDs I own, hands down. It's simply amazing. And that's completely separate from the music--the sound itself is phenomenal. With the box set and now the deluxe jewel, they've remastered it, and the sound isn't nearly as good. Just a thought...

There's something weird about the songs on the new box set. It claims to be the complete recordings, and as a completist, to me that really sounds appealing. But as I've looked more closely, I notice that the original "Celeste II" LP released in 1991 contains four songs. When the "Second Plus" CD was released, they included those four, but then put two tracks on at the beginning, the six on at the end, tracks which seem to be Ciro Perrino works rather than Celeste. Now with the box set, the third disc entitled "Celeste II - Prince of One Day," they seem to have entitled it perfectly. There are the original four tracks of the "Celeste II" LP and then as CZ mentions the English demos for the original Celeste album, when they briefly engaged an English female vocalist. So those songs are a welcome addition, truly they are the "Prince of One Day" songs. But the eight bonus tracks put on the "Second Plus" CD are not included in the box set. Nor are the recordings from the very rare CD "I Suoni in una Sfera," which also seem to be Perrino recordings, not Celeste, though released under his name (except for the three songs from the original Celeste album which are included on the disc). So... Just be aware of what you're getting. I love the boxset, the booklet is fantastic, and I love the other recordings by Il Sistema and St. Tropez that are difficult to find. (By the way, there is to my recollection only one song by Il Sistema not included on this set, and that's on YouTube so you can grab that too.) And perhaps it does include all of the recordings by Celeste proper, but it doesn't contain all of the recordings that have been released under Celeste's name. Confusing enough for you?

I agree Todd. Warm and pure. I have that 1994 edition. But the boxset for 30 euros, it's almost a bargain, no ?

Todd explains thoroughly what I couldn't bother to type out. The jewel case edition appears to be about half the price of the box set so it is an excellent value. But the omission of I Suoni in una Sfera is puzzling, especially since a lot of that material is much closer to the Celeste s/t than Celeste II.
