Hi, I'm a physics student and a guitarist from Norway. I got my introduction to progressive music with Dream Theater, but it was with Rush that I was forever lost in it's intricate and ever exciting soundscapes. I'm a prog nut, but appreciate lots of other music too, which I believe is important to be able to bring something new to the genre. I'm here to suggest a band called Ossicles for addition to the site - it's a two-man piece who has recently released an impressive debut, a double album called "Mantelpiece" heavily influenced by (and approved by!) the darkminded brilliance of Steven Wilson, so keep an eye out for that one!
I also play in a funkpunkprogrock band called Glider Collider, but that's for another topic ;) Edited by Heum - May 31 2013 at 16:54 |

Head over to the part of the forum called "Suggest new artists" and post links to the band you'd like to have considered there. YouTube vids, bandcamp or other legal places where the music can be sampled obviously an advantage.
Apart from that: Velkommen. |

Guldbamsen: Yeah, I've noticed that the genre seems to be in healthier shape than expected in this country. It seems that most Norwegian prog bands actually are MORE known outside it's borders than within. Examples include Wobbler, White Whillow, D'accorD and Nordagust, all of which I first heard of through the British mag "Prog" (by Classic Rock Magazine). The bands that people here usually know of, on the other hand, are the likes of Motorpsycho, Shining, Monstereo and such.
Windhawk: Certainly ;) Edit: Upon attempting to post a new topic in the "Suggest new bands"-subforum, the following message is presented: "You do not have permission to post new topics in this forum". What is the reason for this, and how do I get permission? Edited by Heum - May 31 2013 at 17:06 |

It's a precautionary thing to weed out spammers. You have to have 5 posts under your belt, before you can open up new threads
![]() BTW I thought Norway was big on its progressive artists. That new Jaga Jazzist album along with last year's Motorpsycho n Storløkken joint venture both seem like huge events with lots of people attending. Maybe it's just people in the know, just like everywhere else. Here in Denmark, I guess folks only know about Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, but I am pretty sure they don't know the first thing about prog.

Ah, forgot about that 5 posts rule. Post a few replies here and there
until you have 5 posts, then hit the suggest new artists section....

Thanks! Thought for a moment it was one hundred posts to get rid of the noobie-mark, glad it was a somewhat lower threshold :) And yeah, about Norwegian prog, you're right that Jaga Jazzist, Shining, Motorpsycho and the like all are fairly well known for anyone into music (as I mentioned), it's the bands that are more directly inspired by that classic seventies prog that remains hidden from the non-prog public.
By the way, if you want an album recommendation, try "Grindstone" by Shining. It is in my opinion maybe the best Norwegian album ever released. It's on Spotify and the like, but for those of you who enjoy the excitement, you can take my word for it - it's a safe bet! As I read in a letter to a mag once: "A pint if you don't like it." |

At this point in the discussion, as their name haven't come up yet, I'd like to toss in some friends of mine to this debate too. Nordagust. Great folks and a great band. Here taped live.

Actually, I did mentioned Nordagust, love their album, hope to see them live soon! If you indeed know them, please send my best, and tell them to keep it up! :D
Oh, and thanks, I hope to see me around here a lot too ;D Love the Hicks-quotes, by the way. Personal favourite: "And we can explore space. Together. Both inner and outer. Forever." I don't know if he ever realized how great a lyrical line that is. (that's five! Alright, off to the "New bands"-sections for another try) Edited by Heum - June 02 2013 at 17:24 |

Ah, didn't see you mention them. Oh well. I know them, although not in a personal I see them fairly often kinda way. But have enjoyed being with them on a few occasions, a couple of memorable trips to Sweden that have given me memories for life. And they are working on a new album which will be be interesting, especially since their debut by and large consisted of material made more than 10 years ago. I'll send them a hiya from you ;-)

Thanks, the new material is great news, all I really know of them (apart from the album, which I bought almost immediately after it was released and I stumbled upon it), is from the "On the threshold"-article featured in Classic Rock's Prog magazine. It'll be really exciting, the first one is true beauty :)

Ossicles evaluation link (Crossover sub genre) on progfreak: http://progfreak.com/Ossicles-159333.html?path=pa/recent. Two 'yes' votes already - one more and they're cleared.
