Aria
Alan Sorrenti Rock Progressivo Italiano Review by jeromach
It's been a long while that a not yet known to me artist was able to really impress me, in fact
Captain Beefheart and Amon Düül II were the last and that's been some time ago.
Yes, I have discovered good music meanwhile, able to indeed impress me, Andre Demay's
Generic, Farm's Farm, Pell Mell's Marburg, Yezda Urfa's Boris, Gryphon's Red Queen to Gryphon
Three and Harmonium's "cinquime saison" to name just a few. Still, no new Beefhearts or Düüls,
until....
It did start with Enzo Capuano's "Storia Mia Scritta" I need to say. Discovered just a little earlier
than Aria, a marvellous album that I seem to have played 55 times last three months. Capuano did
really trigger my extended interest in RPI, music that I of course knew and appreciated through
PFM and the like, but never really in a way that I could place it in my personal top 5 of musically
interesting countries. But as so often appears, there's a near bottomless pit of yet to be discovered
musical gems, and unlike Alice, who landed at a certain moment, I'm still falling and still
discovering. Progressive music in a way is like science; at the moment you think you've discovered
the last to be known secret of your quest it just only reveals the next uncountable number of roads
to the solution you then know is further away than ever. Scientifically it's frustrating perhaps,
musically it's a gift :).
So, and then you encounter Sorrenti and his "Aria". I learned to distinguish between "no","nice for
the archive" and "store for later checking" by just listening to short fragments of music while trying
to wade through large numbers of albums, because there's simply not enough time in any human
life to listen to every single piece of progressive music. Aria made the "checking" list. Interesting at
first glance, different, piano, violin, an unheard before style of chanting, layered harmonic
dissonants (Beefheart tought me dissonants can be very harmonic, thanks so much captain for
showing me this hidden beautiful world!), indeed, worth a further check.
And yes, I found one. One of the few pieces of musical artistry that really stand out. A debut album,
even adding to the magic. Magnificent in my humble opinion. And can I explain why? Tell you why
it's worth to give it a try? No, I can't. I don't know why particularly this music so impresses me, it's
like soup, the whole can taste so well, while also the ingredients are known, but why specifically
the combination tastes so well is difficult to say. Does it matter? No.
NotAProghead's remark on wives, girlfriends etc. proves to be right; this is the only album ever that
made my wife come to me to ask (demand) me to switch it off. I'm still in doubt whether to regard
that as a compliment for this album or not, but I'm inclined to think it is :).
Masterpiece, five stars.

Yes, great review Jeromach! Now Jim, your highlighted quote has me thinking of albums that the other halves haven't appreciated! Hmmmmm...I've mentioned before my second girlfriend really disliked Porcupine Tree's `Metanoia'...but I vividly remember my recent ex couldn't stand Le Orme's `Felona e Serona', I had it playing in the car once, and because she was Italian she could understand the vocals perfectly, and she said `Turn this stupid thing off, these words make no sense' lol! I tried to explain that progressive rock is full of albums with very surreal, stream-of-consciousness words that are not always very obvious, but as her eyes started to glaze over with boredom I just let it go.... I didn't know you had an Italian girlfriend, that would make it very interesting being an English speaking RPI fan
My own gal's nemesis is Sonic Youth.....I put that on and I risk the plug being pulled straight outta the wall. |

I used to bug her all time saying `What did that line say?' Occasionally she'd read the album sleeves and say `these words are just crazy!'
I remember that time with `Felona' she said `They're talking about planets being brothers and sisters or something, or evil twins...what the hell does that even mean?!' Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - May 27 2013 at 21:10 |

Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno is the only RPI album my wife has asked me to turn off. She likes the cover though!

Area is also a low-SAF artist.

Coaster, what an unfortunate coincidence! My ex hated the second Raccomandata album from 2010 `Il Pittore Volante'! During that chorus in the first track she goes `Urh, that shrieking voice sounds like the guy from Guns N Roses' lol! Strange thing is, she wasn't exactly wrong!
Ooh, Jim...Area - they're what we call in the Prog business `the widower-maker lol! Close to being a total dealbreaker that band, my friend! I think bands like Van der Graaf Generator and Henry Cow pretty much seal your fate with the ladies too! |

I gave up long ago on playing prog of any kind around the wife, she will listen to classical music with me but thats about it. I have found in her car that her radio was on an old disco station, I quickly informed her never to play that in my precense.
I thought I would try to "SAF" on a mild instrumental RPI by Luciano Basso, the Voci album. She said turn it off, it makes her nervous.... I told her all the other RPI stuff I was getting into and she looked at me like I had some foreign object growing out of the middle of my forehead...
I think I will need a case of Jim's cough elixir for her to listen to anything I like....only if I decided to give her any

I think just about every girl I've met my music has always been an issue. I've gotten that 'this music makes me nervous before' But anyway. I do have a few failsafes, not Italian though, and it's Kevin Moore's chroma key. If the girl had some edge to her I'll throw on OSI. Instant winner!!
Try it my friends. Lady luck will be on your side. I swear it. ;) |

I've found one or two exes really responded to Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree. I suppose Ptree has really had some nice fragile and thoughtful tracks.
I was thinking, Nick, try some Riverside! I always thought Riverside sounded in places like a more obviously sadly romantic PTree, mostly because of the heartfelt lyrical moments? I'm going to try and think of some nice RPI stuff that might win some female hearts over! |
