I found him: Joseph Merrick (1862-1890) aka the Elephant Man. All the hints fit.
I'll be back later with a new one.

Clap You’re right again! Well done! And I’m sure you noticed that the Bowie cover was a double hint.

Bowie also played the starring role in a play The Elephant Man for some five months.

Exactly. And Merrick was seen as a monster (he wasn’t, of course, unlike our good old friend Bill Brodie).

The cause of his death was named after him.

That was the last Genesis album I bought. There are quite a few good songs on it, but it also showed very clearly the path they were choosing for the next decade.

It doesn’t look like Clement Dukes fits in (you don’t die from Dukes’ disease, and Clement himself isn’t prominent enough to have his own Wiki article).

European?

If I wanted to hint at the name, I would choose another, earlier album from another subgenre.

Yes, he was European.

French or Portuguese?

(Many years ago I went to a concert with King Crimson and Roxy Music in a bullfighting arena in the south of France – but you may have referred to another kind of bull, like John Bull. LOL)

No, neither French nor Portuguese.

(The bullfight was not located in England either, nor did he have a fight with any Englishman as far as I know ).

He made his career outside Europe.
