Their album A Crow Left of the Murder had numerous prog elements (namely on Sick Sad Little World and its extended solo).

The other day I discovered these songs from the Halo 2 soundtrack which are unabashedly prog and very very interesting ( http://www.ashadeofgreen.com/mp3.html )

The 2nd, 3rd, and especially 4th movements are the best.

I really hope that they continue on this path because they are such talented musicians and could truly bring prog back to the mainstream and introduce it to a younger audience.

Any thoughts?

I used to love Incubus.  I thought A Crow... was fairly weak (although Megalomaniac is a great song), and I would never call them prog.  Pretty decent band though, Make Yourself is their best release.

I wasn't saying that theyre prog, but rather that they are heading in that direction with their most recent material.

I agree that MY probably is their best album thus far, though I like Crow a lot.

i loved crow. i'd agree they experimented more. the bass on pistola has a very strong rush influence. dunno whether its all prog, there are slight influences. who knows what the future holds, for now we'll have to get alive at red rocks on dvd!

I used to like them, but after 'Make Yourself' the band went in a different direction. They changed the tone of their lyrics and in my opinion started sounding less expiramental, taking the band in a mainstreamn direction. I never heard anything from 'Science' or earlier on the radio. To me, much of the material on 'Crow' and 'Morning View' gets repetitive, and i don't see them do much with their songs after the inital guitar riff. Halo 2 soundtrack or not, I don't think they are prog, and I don't think that they will head in that direction. But this is just my opinion.

Listen to "Magic Medicine" from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and you're in for a trip. It's instrumental, with a voice that says some random stuff: "On this page you see a little girl giggling at a hippopotamus. I wonder why?"

Incubus is honestly one of my favorite (non-prog) bands.  I love all of their material, but I prefer the more experimental early works like SCIENCE and Fungus Amongus.  The Halo 2 soundtrack work is absolutely amazing, and I definitely think that A Crow... was a step in the progressive direction when compared to Morning View and Make Yourself.

I have the Red Rocks DVD and they are obviously starting to experiment more with their playing.  Just watch the 10+ minute version of "Vitamin" in which there is a 3-way drum battle between Brandon, Jose and Ben Kenney.  The guitarist experiments with lots of weird analog modulation.

Of course, I would never submit them for inclusion on ProgArchives, but they are certainly NOT the average pop rock band that some claim they are.

I also just noticed that this is a really old thread and that very few of the originators are still around.  sorry to bring up old news, but I had to say something.
