There are Christians out there who have absolutely zero problem with homosexuality and Christians out there who wish to persecute homosexuals. My guess is that something more is going on than just religion and that homophobic Christians simply are bigoted and religion is a convenient excuse for their hatred. "My god told me to hate gays, so I have to."

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

That passage appears to carry a very sexist message. It even outlines how God made gay people gay. Why? So he has someone to punish in case he's bored?

That's partly true. I wonder if they were really bigots at the time of writing though. Applying 21st Century morals and ethics to people who lived quite a few centuries ago is quite...well, I don't want to be rude.
Now of course following their writing 100% to the letter so many centuries later might also be not totally wise.

But whichever way you look at it. It still means your on a sticky wicket taking it as the 'word of God' even if you are a Christian.

My faith is ever strengthened...
I count it joy to be labeled a bigot and foolish for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! The Gospel is divisive, I will never ever deny that fact.

So true. One cannot apply 21st Century morals and ethics to people who lived in biblical times. You cannot even do it with people who lived just a few hundred years ago. That is one of the biggest problems with the study of history in general.

Yeah, I've read it. First of all, the chapter/verse thing has hurt the Bible, not helped it. It's caused people to read the Bible like a constitution. Paul is playing chess in Romans, setting up a structure that he can then topple. He's battling the false gospels of legalism and gnosticism - asceticism and hedonism. Also, you have to understand the history and the culture of the day, in which it was acceptable for Romans to go nuts with their pleasure seeking and go to orgies, and have sex with temple prostitutes in the worship of a false god - heterosexual and homosexual prostitution. Then you have to pay close attention to the word "natural".

Actually on many things you can. Human nature has not changed that much over several tens of thousand years, and considering that a lot (or "most" or "all" depending on who you choose to believe) of our morals and ethics are supposed to come from "the church" in the first place then we can judge them by our standards because our standards are their standards with a small amount of modifcation that we've managed to crow-bar into our codes of morality inspite of the overwhelming influence of the church over the past two thousand years. Like it or not we are as bigotted now as they were then, we are as homophobic now as they were then, we are as immoral and as amoral as they ever were, we are as prudish and we are as promiscuous. We did not invent all those "sins" listed in Leviticus, Romans, Corintians and the gospel acording to saint Tim - all we've ever did different was ease up on the punishments - we no longer consider that "...that those who do such things deserve death..." and feel ourselves "righteous" for saying it... and that is the only thing we can judge them differently on.
