Houses is great but it's unfinished, missing cuts that should've appeared on it - like the title track instead of embarrassing disasters like "D'yer Mak'er" or "Dancing Days", and sounds odd (which is surprising as Page is a brilliant producer -- plus the material is far more compelling on TSRtS.

Anyway, I'm glad HotH is getting a lot of love here. By far their most progressive work. As much as I don't like doing this, I actually agree with Gosha Starostin here - the record does sound kind of Yes-ish.
Does anyone think the stylistic diversity on the record is unnecessary in some places (reggae, doo-wop, ...)?
| I thought you were for stylistic diversity?

That's just something I read from Starostin's review. I'm not against stylistic diversity as long as there is a reason for it to be on a record.

^^ There's always a reason for it to be on a record. To be bring various influences. To me that's always a good thing but that's me

^ If you want variety on your record, you have to be able to justify it. You have to understand what those genres are about so that you can actually sound authentic. If you want to, you can always put your own twist on a genre ... kind of re-define it ... which is a risky business, I think.

^ But then you have to justify those risks. And you can do a lot of other things with music.

Agreed, but I would say Zep primarily took their risks live, and I mean risks (there were times they sounded truly awful), whereas it could be said Rush has a more diverse catalog. Of course they've been together continuously since '68. So did John Rutsey die in a bizarre gardening accident or what?

Really......that's interesting since your heroes in Rush were all influenced by Zep. They have said so many times. |
I'm allowed to say I don't like them am I not? Too much Baby, baby,
babay from Robert Plant. Last I checked Rush hardly ever spews "baby" in their lyrics
|
So...this is all about the word 'baby'....seriously?

I have to agree...never really cared for Dyer Maker or Grunge and why wasn't the title track on there..? Nevertheless Houses is a fine lp .

No, I don't like Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham's music too if you can believe that . Oh yeah and it doesn't help when you don't give credit to artists when credit is due. Plant's vocals get irritating after awhile, Bonham's fills and playing style is virtually the same, Jones' playing does nothing for me, he is average and Page, well he might be the most overrated guitarist in rock music. He is good technically(the only redeeming quality of LZ) but otherwise their music gets old pretty quick for me. Aside from Rush(1974). I don't hear any Led Zeppelin influence, it's either Rush themselves or Genesis, Yes or other influences

This sounds as much like a description of the members of Rush.

"Disasters" is a bit strong, I can understand why people wouldn't like "D'yer Mak'er" and "Dancing Days" has a slightly repetitive riff, but I think they're both good songs.
I could probably live without "The Crunge" though.
