We seem to be living in a world where to create uniquely, to challenge, to dare to be adventuresome and individualistic are discouraged. The hypocracy, greed, jealousy, and spiteful intrigue that premeates the music biz is disgusting, and in my opinion, anyone who sees it otherwise is naive or deluded.

Videos like that make me wonder why Zappa is not the household name he used to be, at least with people who are 30 and younger. If you say Jimi Hendrix, everyone knows who that is, but if you mention Frank Zappa, I guarantee a random person under the age of 30 will be like "who?" |

I listened to the new 2012 Lather yesterday, always a great album, but I think the reissue had better sound, I did a little compare and contrast with the 1996 RYKO version (with the cow), and the 2012 one (with whip cream all over FZ's face) sounded a lot better. The only thing is the packaging is not so great, kinda hard to get the CDs out of he sleeves, and it doesn't have the bonus tracks that the RYKO one has. But I hadn't enjoyed Lather that much in a while.
Still have to listen to the 2012 Playground Psychotics, the only reissue I haven't listened to yet, also never listened to the album itself before. |

I haven't been on as much of a Zappa kick as I had been for the past 4 1/2 months, partially because I didn't want to get burnt out, but also because I've gotten a lot of new albums by other bands and artists. However, I've only listened to the most recent Zappa purchase a couple times or so, and they're all 2012 reissues. I plan on getting some more albums from the Zappa.com store, probably gonna get Civilization Phaze III and Feeding The Monkies... (and Buffalo if they restock it soon).
I'm starting to think that doing a Zappa chronological "marathon" is not going to happen until the summer at the earliest since I still have a few albums to still get, and I have to at least get to know them and any recent ones I wasn't already familiar with. BUT IT WILL HAPPEN! |

I own the first CD Apostrophe / Overnite sensation of the eighties. To my ears the sound is fabulous. Years ago I bought the Ryko version and hated it. How are the separate 2012 reissues of Apostrophe and Overnite ?

I've come to realize that most of the RYKO issues of Frank's albums are either bad or off in some way.
The UMe Apostrophe is the QUAD mix, meaning it is the same sound that the 70s vinyl had, but on CD. It is different than the RYKO version (though not as extreme as the difference in the RYKO and UMe mixes of Hot Rats) so it is good to have both versions, as I will need to get the RYKO version soon. Over-nite Sensation is mixed using the original analog tapes, meaning the sound is 1000 times better than the RYKO versions. Listening to JABFLA, I think Billy The Mountain would have been better as the last track, and the 4 shorter songs first.

Finally got around to listening to Playground Psychotics for the first time yesterday. It was enjoyable, had that Mystery Disc/Lost Episodes vibe with all the field recordings. However, the version of Billy The Mountain on there seemed superior to the original JABFLA version.
Been going through the albums I still need, so what are your opinions on the recent albums from the last few years? Philly '76 Hammersmith Odeon Carnegie Hall Feeding the Monkies At Ma Masion Road Tapes Vol. 1 Finer Moments I have Finer Moments, and it is quite enjoyable album. I don't have any of the others above, though I've listened to HO once over a year ago. I don't like that Carnegie Hall has a Persuasions set before FZ's two shows, and it's a more expensive album, so I haven't been trying to get it in any rush. I'm looking to get Buffalo but also another from the list above. Which would be the best one to get first? |

I haven't gotten any of those above albums yet, but Finer Moments is high on my list of stuff to get next.
And I agree with you about Billy the Mountain. I think it's more definitive because it's a complete performance, whereas the JABFLA version has several sections edited out to better fit one side on an LP.

I have them all. Each has their own merits, but it depends on which era you like best to determine which disk to purchase. In my opinion, Finer Moments, while good, is the least important of the above list.
