Listening back to Marillion's 'afraid of sunlight' (certainly one of their finest albums to date), talk talk and the blue nile come immeditaley to mind due to the overall ambient-pop atmosphere. However, we can also refer to the Lanois-Eno collaboration on U2's 'unforgettable fire' and most of all on 'joshuah tree' for inspiration to this album. The ambient/ americana influence of songs like "elvis presley and america" or "with or without you". I take advantage of this poll to recommend Daniel Lanois' albums 'Acadie' (features some members of U2 but is mostly folk-oriented) and 'For the beauty of Wynona'.

That's my favourite U2 song. I can take or leave that Marillion song.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Afraid of Sunlight is a great song.
With or Without You is even better.

Mostly anything by Fish Marillion (and Brave) > U2

But with the exception of Brave (and Marbles), Hoggarth Marillion < U2

And this particular U2 song >>> Marillion's.

I was huge into The Joshua Tree. I still think it's a great album for its time, even if it seems dated to me now. I find that today I'd rather listen to Achtung Baby and Zooropa (their last great album). I waited for so long for U2 to make another great album, but I've long since given up.

I never got the adoration for Afraid of Sunlight. The track I really love from that album is Out of This World.
