I will take a wild guess: William Shakespeare. He had eight siblings, died before 1700, and the "playing wiith fire" might refer to the burning down of the Globe theatre on June 29th 1613.

Not bad, but too wild in one respect: this person is not British. Welcome back in the game ! Fleas and mosquitos.

Shakespeare was British, so it can’t be him. German? EDIT: Shakespeare had seven siblings, not eight.

Yes, German. Noah's Ark was unlikely to have been overcrowded.

Athanasius Kircher. The name Athanasius is Greek and means "immortal" (my friend Thanasis thinks it’s a bit funny that the abbreviation of his name means "mortal" instead). His Katzenklavier would indeed have been painful for the poor cats.

Bravo! It was indeed Athanasius Kircher. I don't know why, but I have been in the mood for Jesuits for a week now. Quite funny, from a topographical point of view, that he was on a ship heading for Vienna, as the Wiki entry says...

Your recent interest in Jesuits may have something to do with white smoke and a man who renamed himself Francesco.
I’ll be back with a new one later.

Yes, it was the Pope I had in mind, hence the "white smoke".
Next one: Female, deceased.
