I have found a sample with a 100% id match: Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891).
All the hints fit, but I had to delve somewhat deeper in the corners to find the connection with the Nordic Council's Literature Prize: this one was given to Lars Saabye Christensen for his book Halvbroren (The Half Brother), in which, by the way, the guy called Barnum is not a teetotaler by far.
I'll be back later with a new one.
