Pink Floyd is more influential, no question. But I like VdGG more, and I feel they're musically cooler. Also, in my opinion, Hammill kills Waters as lyricist and vocalist.

To me is more like Floyd evolved, where as any VDGG album sounds almost the same.
Some times early Floyd (before Ummagumma)
Some times Gilmore early (Umma - Meddle)
Sometimes Golden era ( Dark - Animals)
Sometimes Late era (wall and later)

With VDGG i like them, but it dosent matter much what album i put on..

Huge fan of both, but Pink Floyd is a hair ahead VdGG for me.

Van der Graaf Generator Van der Graaf Generator have at least 3 albums that I adore and that are probably in my top 15. As for Pink Floyd Pink Floyd I adore only ANIMALS so it's an easy decision

Would you catch the final words of mine?

I have only recently got some VDGG albums, and I have enjoyed them very much. I love the way Hamill sings, though I guess he didn't really use all his potential in a traditional way (he could have singed in the most beautiful way, but most of the times he went for versatility). And that sax, they could make truly heavy music without guitars, only the sax and Hamills vocals. However, I still can't vote against Pink Floyd, they are just my favourite band.

I go with Floyd. VdGG has no guitar. I can't get past that. I'm biased. VdGG arrangements spend too much time not going anywhere at times. The saxes are cool, though.

Floyd. I like VDGG, but they were never in the same class.......

Ignore this, I just rediscovered Pink Floyd's music and they are more legendary. So if I voted today, Pink Floyd would be my vote

Graaf easy. Floyd are far from top 10 material. Not overly talented musicians and average composers. Dark side is pretty boring
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

VDGG any day. Pink Floyd isn't very important in my mental library.

I voted for VDGG.  Pawn Hearts kicks ass on Dark Side.  Although I saw Roger Waters perform Dark Side a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended.
