Has anyone listened to Gotye before? He's famous for the wonderful (if you haven't overheard it already) Somebody I Used To Know.
I just got his previous album, Like Drawing Blood and it's rhythmic genius with mesmerizing vocal arrangements. 
Fairly Gabriel-ish. Highly recommended for anyone looking for complex indie-pop. 
Crushed like a rose in the riverflow.

I just can't listen to symph prog all the time, even though it's my favourite style of music.  I love electronic music (both prog and non-prog, IDM electronica etc) and I probably listen to that stuff half of the time these days.

Add a slice of psych/space rock, heavy rock/metal/prog, @modern prog', some mainstream rock, some pop, crossover prog and ambient, and you have the idea.

Incidentally, Rob is spot on about Count of Tuscany, brilliant song and miles better than anything on the latest DT.  Mangini is truly an awesome drummer but I think they'll miss MP in the long term.  It'll be interesting to see what their new album is like.

Roland, Horizons and Roj...Hey sound like a band name to me - however......
I often change my mind and I wasn't suggesting that Rush produce repeats of 2112 ad-nauseum - all I was suggesting that just maybe they could have produced a couple of CD's that  re-captured the brilliance - 1975-1980....
If you like your electro-pop or whatever Rush morphed into post 1980 - then quite possibly they may have produced a lot of music for your liking......With me it was the absolute loathing of "Signals"....hate that CD and still do to this day...thus I can't be arsed listining to anything later...I may be missing something I may like a bit - but I haven't got time to find out - too busy exploring the many avenues of symphonic prog left open to me.....I did like a bit of electronica when I was younger but I find it godawful now for some strange reason...I could put it on in the background, but I just couldn't LISTEN to it.......Unlike some of you my palate is seemingly narrowing rather than widening with age......By the time I'm ninety I'll be listening to a constant loop of a single prog epic..as the alzeimers kicks in it will as if I'm re-discovering the track every trip back round the loop......Tongue

If you got to the point that you had about a twenty minute memory capacity before everything refreshes, what is your music choice going to be?  What song do you want to be fresh each and every time you hear it for the rest of your life . . . muhahahahaha


Off the top of my head, Stardust came to mind.  It's not my favorite song, not even my favorite Flower Kings song, but there's something about it that makes me ok with it being the Alzheimer song.  I think it's because I used it as my alarm clock song for a while.  It was a perfect twenty minute song that would slowly lull me into awareness and by the time it was over it was time to get up.

This may sound strange, but I'd probably pick a few Cheap Trick songs for that loop.  I'd want to remember my youth by the time I'm that old, and those songs would do it.  If it HAS to be prog, I'd pick Echoes (Pink Floyd, in case you think I mean the Camel song of the same name.....I'm sure that are others as well.....which isn't really prog, in my view, but it's on the site so fair game I say).

Good music is good music, and post-MP has a lot of it. Their musicianship was being executed in the albums very well. Some of Geddy's best bass work is after Moving Pictures. Sure the music isn't like Cygnus X-1, but songs like The Analog Kid, Leave That Thing Alone, Force Ten, etc etc are still great songs. 
Why would a band want to keep making the same music for 40 years? I know i wouldn't. That's why a lot of these retro bands sound so cheesy, too bad they can't really keep up with modern music.

Honestly, I think Rush got better after MP, as musicians and composers.  By the time of Hold Your Fire, they started to lose me, and after Presto I never listened to another new Rush album when it came out (heard tracks on the radio here and there, which generally just confirmed for me that I was done with them).

However, if I was to pick my favorite Rush album, it would be either Permanent Waves or Hemispheres (which, incidentally, are the only two Rush albums I still own).

Also, I happen to enjoy a number of so-called "retro" bands.  I think that much of what was developed in the 70's music scene can be developed further and there are a few bands that continue to do that to my satisfaction (TFK's at the top of that list, of course).  Still, I can not live on symph prog alone...........

You know, I'm willing to accept that I've become an old fart if despising that "song" (Somebody I Used To Know) qualifies me for that.  I see no redeeming qualities in such "music", and even though I try, the vast majority of new popular music hardly sounds like music to me.  Much of it sounds like rip offs of 80's and 90's stuff, when it sounds like music at all.  I get the sense more and more that everything really has been done with rock based popular music.

Talking music in general however, I'm sure there is much more to be explored.

Thanks, I didn't think it was just me noticing this.  In fact, our entire culture (here in the USA, but I suspect it's similar in other countries) seems to be entirely based on nostalgia, even for people who are too young to remember that actual time a style or trend originated in.  I mean, how long have kids been wearing their pants below their arse?  How long since there was an actual original, and groundbreaking, movie that isn't just a remake (or a remake with a different name to hide that it's really just a remake)?  How long has it been since we've had a truly innovative musical development (like syths in the 70's, or the invention of the electric guitar, etc.)?  Maybe I am just getting old LOL

Grunge and gangsta rap (both early-mid 90S) was probably the last time music affected clothing style, attitudes, etc. Sure fads have come and gone, and maybe the New Jersey Guido look is the closest we've come to fashion change, but that was largely MTV inspired (I think), which ironically still, had nothing to do with music directly. People generally still wear similar clothes to what people wore 12-14 years ago.

As far as actual development in musical instruments, the use of the Autotune was a big thing in the mid-late 2000s, and dub-step recently became the biggest thing, but both things weren't as radical as synths or electric guitar. Autotune goes back to the 1970s, and dub-step is just a variation of House music.

IWith prog tis all about the music that takes you deep into it's soundscape - My mrs tells me that it's all about the lyrics with her thats why she's creaming her drawers whilst listening to boy-zone, westlife or some other  bunch of fiscally engineered w**k-pots designed to squeez the spondoolicks out of wimmin-kind........The clanking, industrial intro guitar solo of Close to the edge just doesn't do it for most wimmin.........wonder why Wink

Permanent Waves is my favorite album by them for sure. Flawless in every aspect. Never gets old.
