Gee, re-visited this thread, and what do my eyes see: The dead horse of Beatles vs. Rush is still being flogged, and "Kati"'s hugs are still being transmitted to the masses. There is a certain sense of permanence to this picture, wouldn't you say?

Neither will you find 1000's of teenage girls screaming and pulling their hair out to most of the stuff the Beatles did after '65. The Beatles are a pop band for sure, but they're the number one argument in favor of pop as a legitimate art form. Rush, on the other hand, are the number one argument in favor of keeping science fiction and Greek mythology away from drummers with a vivid imagination. (Just kidding, I like Rush.)

Plus, it's not true that pop artists always win the polls. If you made a poll with Rush against, say, the Hollies, I'm sure Rush would win, and not just on PA. And if the Rolling Stone had a poll with Rush against Lady Gaga, I'm sure Rush would win.

It goes like this....  Rush are ultra progressive when pitted with say Beatles and accessible, unpretentious and non elitist when pitted with say Magma.  Heads I win, tails you lose.   Tongue   Love the familiar and convenient implication, by the way, that if thousands of teenage girls like something, it's got to be bad.

By the way, I can hardly think of any Rush composition as progressive as Day in a life (or Rolling Stones' 2000 light years from Home for that matte).   Ambition, in terms of writing sprawling epics, technicality and progressiveness are all entirely different things and existence of one quality doesn't imply the others.
Nailed it, guys. Plus, after '65, it just didn't feel like The Fabs were a band designed to be awesome live ... because they were busy awesoming with stuff in the studio.

Also: I didn't know Magma were pretentious and elitist.

On a recent Ultimate Classic Rock poll, Beatles lost to Guns n Roses who also beat out The Stones and Led Zeppelin ShockedShocked...go figure.
So to see on Ultimate Classic Rock, these pillars of classic rock fall to GnR was pretty shocking, IMO. Its a poll and it does not mean a whole lot...but its people voting.

Rush have very few "sprawling epics" as compared to say Dream Theater, Magma, Yes and maybe even Tull. Not sure I get the Day In A Life comment, but I respect your opinion.

I have zero qualms about this poll, it has no bearing on how I look at either band...well only one is a band still and for more than double the time than the band that quit. And yes, many, many bands have outlasted Beatles in recording years.
The Beatles vs anyone, they should win because they are the most popular band in the world still..and for many, many people that is the only reason they should win, a poll is a popularity contest at its core.....means nothing.

And I agree........Heads I win Tails you loose.

Well, I remember somebody made a supposed troll poll pitting DT with Magma.  And when a lot of people did vote for Magma, he claimed that it proved his point, that it was just very cool to pretend to like Magma, or some such thing.  Apparently, you cannot have a valid reason to like Magma more than DT (er, I do, no LaBrie for starters).

This is what I keep saying.  It's perfectly acceptable to like one band more than the other no matter which ones are included in the comparison so don't grumble about others' choices.

I don't really get what is so shocking about that.  Maybe they were GNR fans or maybe they didn't like Beatles or LZ.  A man may be allowed his personal taste in music, I guess?  I don't see why it is that because Beatles are supposedly so successful in wooing teenage girls, they ought to win every poll because a poll only reflects - hopefully - the tastes of the sample that voted and there are no 'shoulds' about the 'winner' or 'loser' of such polls.

I sympathize with Mr. Catcher10 here. Maybe it's not about the merit of the music from the rock legends, as it is something that no poll should be done on. Catcher's expectations may have been founded on merit where as the poll results were founded on taste.

It doesn't seem to really specify one way or the other.  As such, the whole idea of a classic rock superbowl knockout sounds ridiculous to me.

Unless they clearly said you must vote for the more influential or important band, there is no mandatory reason to vote for Stones over GNR (or Beatles over Rush, for that matter).   The reasons given by some GNR fans to vote over Stones are pretty similar to those given by Rush fans, by the way:  Keith Richards hasn't played solos like Sweet Child and Mick Jagger can't sing like AXL.   I am not saying any of those things of course.

Ehn, I've seen worse. I can understand someone choosing Guns N' Roses over the Beatles and the Stones.

What I can't, however, understand is why VH1 chose "Hey Joe" over "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" when including Jimi Hendrix in their "Top 100 Hard Rock Songs".
He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball!

I am not a Beatles fan, never have been. All I see when I hear one of their songs is 1000's of screaming teenage girls, but that is not the main reason for my dislike. I don't like their singing or music playing, The Who easily blow the fab four off any stage any day, The Beatles are not known for any chops.

Madonna and Lady Gaga are more prog than the Beatles, but neither are progressive rock, all three are pop music artists. But I do see how easy it is for people to try and include Beatles into one of the many prog subgenres, and that is fine.

They are a pop band and will always win these type of polls....Its just a poll by the way.

In reference to populatity and girls liking bands, in the prog scene Rush are one of the most popular bands, also I have found that it's also one of the top all time favorite bands for the female prog listeners. I have met a few, (very little, I must add) men who are not particularly into Rush however to date I have not met any single female prog listeners that does not like Rush. Stern Smile

Catcher10 those hugs were meant for Sonia not for you Ouch and to say that Lady Gaga and Madonna are more Prog than The Beatles is just plain silly Tongue . The Beatles were one of the first Proto-Prog bands and they were an influence on Procol Harum and King Crimson Shocked

Thanks for the young Padawan compliment Big smile
