Topic: Need music for a party Posted: February 10 2013 at 11:26 |
Can anyone recommend me a good hifi unit for a party? I need something that I can either plug my (non-Apple) MP3 player into or a USB stick or to stream to from my tablet via Bluetooth (preferably the latter). Needs to be loudish but it's only for a party at home so not deafening. Not looking to spend a fortune.
Thanks.

One thing I find handy for a party, especially if using a MP3 player (and face it, no-one's really listening much to the music anyway...) is a half decent set of powered PC speakers.
They'll just plug into any standard 3.5mm socket, usually have a fairly good(ish) sound, then just put the MP3 onto 'random' & Bob's your father's brother.

That's not a bad idea Jim, thanks. I'll check out my PC speakers.

Jim, I don't care what everyone else says about you, you're a genius. Just found an adapter that I didn't know I had which lets me connect the MP3 player through the PC speakers. This will give us the woofer and 5 speakers! Brilliant. There's a beer waiting for you at the next prog curry.
Just have to disconnect the speakers and carry them all downstairs now.

Buy something with bluetooth. Chicks looove bluetooth : )
No seriously, it's really nice for everyone to be able to play their music easily without hardware connection in a party. I have a BT speaker set which I will not mention (I work for the manufacturer, and the speakers aren't manufactured anymore....), and people really like being able to put their music easily without having to stand next to the speakers and miss their phone calls/messages... people can't live 10 seconds without their phone anymore...
You can get a descent "boombox" for about 150$/ quite easily. Lots of available products.

The PC speakers turned out to be not loud enough with a room full of people, so I had to wheel out my 350W bass amp and use that instead. At one point my son complained that his bedroom floor was shaking.

Perfect - the one time in history a son shouts down the stairs for dad to turn it down
