I've been warming up to Momentum recently as well. I was a little disappointed in it when it came out because it's so standard Neal Morse, but now that I've gotten over that, I've begun to really enjoy it. Strange though, is that didn't happen with Testimony 2; I liked that one immediately and still feel it's one of his best. |

Love this epic, especially the MTFK version. Sometimes I forget about it because of all the other Flower Kings epics. |

I do love accents though.....I absolutely love girls with an irish lilt.......very sexy indeed....Roine saying yust for Just hasn't got the same effect though.....The Dutch English accent is most comedic if you ask me.......Farzsher.......class!

The most obvious pronunciation wobbler is Roine's pronunciation of 'ch', ie: child becomes shild and church becomes shursh. As Nov said, it's not a criticism, I find it endearing too. To write lyrics in a language that isn't your first language is pretty impressive as far as I'm concerned. Roine's command of English is fabulous and a lot better than my Swedish. I do know how to say thank you in Danish though .
TFK/Morse tickets now in hand and looking forward to the gig and to chewing the fat with Rob . Nov, are you going to the London gig or both? I really must get a couple of Neal's albums as I think that will definitely improve my appreciation of his band live. Any recommendations as to what I should get? I suppose Momentum is a definite as I presume his set will be drawn heavily from that. And as for Opeth fans railing against their veering away from death metal, have to agree with them to be honest. Much as I love Heritage a return to the likes of Ghost Reveries would be most welcome to me. Edited by Roj M30 - January 30 2013 at 07:53 |

Momentum for definite, for a second recommendation I would say Sola Scriptura or ?
Alternatively you could get the Sola Scriptura and beyond DVD which is excellent - or for a cheaoer alternative watch it on Youtube ! (I think the whole thing is still on there)

I just consider that album to be the first Flower Kings album, as Roine does as well (though that wasn't his intention when he made it) . He formed the band simply to play stuff from that album, and other prog stuff he was writing (which became the first "official" Flower Kings album, Back in the World). In fact, he has said that he didn't really think of the Flower Kings as a band unit until Stardust We Are (it was still a solo project with a backing band, in his view)! Check out the 70's Kaipa albums with Stolt if you want to hear how great he always was. I don't find them anywhere near as good as Stolt's 90's and later stuff, but it's still quality prog rock..........and interesting to hear that Roine had pretty much developed the style we all know and love in his teens! |

Yeah, the pronunciation thing IS endearing. My first encounter with this type of thing was some early 90's Italian bands singing in English. Then Eloy. So by the time I found the Flower Kings, I was quite used to this type of thing and found Roine to be the best at hiding the fact he wasn't a native English speaker. It's interesting, because as he's gotten older, the accent has become more pronounced (it's not as noticeable on the early FK albums, though still obvious for us native English speakers.......or in my case, American speakers ) |

good point about Vampire's View. it really is an ambitious song and i can't imagine anyone by Daniel singing it. as far as Banks goes, to me it seems like a continuation of SoNE. wasn't that supposed to be a back to basics prog album? i see where you're coming from in terms of wondering if your nuts not liking the album. i'm not a completist in the least. in fact, i go through periods when i actively hate neal morse...it's usually when i think i need to get everything he's done so i don't miss some amazing hook. truth is, i only like a handful of his tunes, with and with out Spocks. neil young is one of my favorite artists and even though critics have been gushing over his last two albums, i think they blow so, are you guys gonna pick up the new steven wilson. i find his stuff to be almost too good. does that make any sense?

love the title track, but the rest doesn't blow me away. the dude has got be sick of the same stuff over and over. the second disc of T2 is classic though. Supernatural and Seeds of Gold are two of his best. the first disc is way to sentimental for me though. i think the next morse i'm going to pick up is One. absolutely love The Creation. i hope the rest of the album is as good.

Really, on the vocoder? I wanted to give Mr. Bodin grief for the whole passage but tried to keep it tame :)
Glad you enjoyed the review. |

Yeah, nothin worse than people who can't speak proper English. When is the UK gonna get with the program, and speak like Tom Cruise speaks and the rest of us Americans speak? Seriously, the way the Irish talk is kinda funny, especially the way they say "arse" instead of you know.... Makes it sound like some kinda horse or donkey. Not sexy, to say the least. I'll take a deeply tanned blonde Swedish girl fumbling through the English language any time. Has anybody seen Tiger Wood's wife??? AND.... I kinda really like, nope I love the way Roine talks English. It seems like several notches above the average Cockney drunk or Royal mumbler(like Prince Chuck....) Oops, now I've done it....... To the group: Hi Kiddies! How have we all been? Are we all getting our share of The Chicken Farmer Song? @Zuma: You OK dude? Lots of wind down your way knockin over large semi-trucks... |

Dennis! warms my heart to see you post. you always show up at just the right time. it is windy as hell here, but not to bad in my specific area. are you getting any of this? kind of crazy. you'll be happy to know that i listened to Space Revolver the other day and paid specific attention to CFS. good stuff. ironically, i've been listening to the whirlwind a lot oh, and for the record, i fancy an australian accent. Peace and nice new avatar pic. |

Awesome review Roland. I agree, that "... and then the numbers" section is beautiful and gives me chills every time. It's one of the best moments in TFK history. Screw it, it's one of the best moments in all of prog rock. Numbers has grown on me so much, I believe it's a top 3 TFK epic for me.The Bad Moon Rising chorus is also a highlight, and can easily get stuck in my head.

Nice review by Tom, I'll have to check the reviews for BoE - see all those nay-sayers who decry such a sublime work of delicious beauty. I don't mind the vocoder, no mention of the ubiquitus Genesis references though - my only slight criticism of the CD in general......

Thanks for the compliments guys.
Craig: sadly the novel has taken a back seat for a year or so, I keep thinking of new material but between the band and the writing that I'm doing for the site, I just don't have the time for everything artistic that I want to do and sadly, the novel is taking a back seat for the time being. Darkshade: that's a pretty bold statement there though, I'll agree in that it was the best prog moment of last year and I'm comfortable with giving it the moniker of best prog moment in the 2010's. I'll have to give it more thought before I'm willing to go beyond that.
Barney: Thanks, there aren't nearly as many angry reviews on this one, it's actually their highest rated album on here. Regarding the Genesis references, I don't really see them that much. Big Big train is a different story entirely, but I don't see a pervasive Genesis theme in Banks of Eden. (well, beyond the name of the CD of course) |
