You're very welcome.
I'm not much of a one for lyrics either to be honest - the voice is just another instrument for me. Mind you, in recent years I've been getting into quite a lot of folk music and the lyrices resonate with me a lot more than in rock music. I was lucky enough to see Queen play a couple of times - once on The Works tour at Wembley Arena in 1984 and then at Knebworth in 1986 which was the last ever Queen concert with Freddie. I am not a great Queen fan but I do feel privileged to have been at the last show.
That's a great list Kati, though I've never really gotten into Uriah Heep to be honest.

He also made some comment years ago about how he felt discouraged, or something like that, about his vocals because of all the flak he gets for them. I think it was part of the reason he didn't sing much in the Agents of Mercy band.Yet, Banks of Eden has more than half of the vocals provided by him.

never heard this. interesting. i like roine, hasse and nad. daniel is a little too much for tfk. i have been enjoying kaipa despite their over the top vocals. it's frustrating these kind of cheese elements in prog. oh well. morse is the worst. he's definitely got a broadway streak in him. i 'm a bit embarrassed to play him around the house, not to mention his theology

2 days without a visit and about 4 pages missed.
Big thanks to Kati for giving the thread a big boost of impetus . Rob, my main problem with the gig is I can't finish work until about 5 at the very earliest so I could be in trouble making it in time. Unfortunately I don't have the days to be able to take a day off either. |

Well, my favorite FK album is still Retropolis. First one I heard, and still the one I like to listen to the most.
My least favorite is Adam & Eve, with the Banks following closely (just can not get into it no matter how many times I spin it.....maybe in the spring and summer it will click for me, since I usually listen to the TFK the most during those times......they just seem like a warm, sunny weather type band to me). The Whirlwind is good, not great, IMO. I think it works really well all the way through, but does have large helpings of cheese throughout. I think Gildenlow was great in the Flower Kings, and great in PoS. I haven't heard the Road Salt albums, but have been curious about them. At some point I'll get around to them, maybe. My favorite band of the moment has been Beardfish, since before the holidays when I got Destined Solitaire and Mammoth. Just an incredible band, can't wait to pick up the new one (just need that and the first album to complete my collection). Have to check out Gungfly as well soon. As to Roine's vocals, they are brilliant. He has character, which is something that can not be said about the vast majority of prog rock vocalists (even though many of them are excellent despite not having character to their voice). Yes, he has his poor moments, but that doesn't detract from his greatness as a vocalist. I can hear though, how he might be unappealing to some people (much like I love Peter Hammill's vocals, but understand why many don't). Finally, I love Zappa, but find the Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar albums (or, as now, one 3 CD album) to be quite dull and impossible to get all the way through. His leads are great, but without the context of the songs themselves, it's just not the same (though there are of course some tunes that are just guitar solos, which are fine, but again, better in the context of a complete show or album). This from someone who got into Zappa mainly because of his guitar leads. Just my opinion, as always. Edited by infandous - January 28 2013 at 07:57 |

Beardfish is on my list to get back into. I love their production. It's a little warmer and less reverb than TFK. The lead singer also has an organ duo called Bootcut. The snippets on youtube sound great. Good point about character. Prog is filled with so many good musicians. Unfortunately, the majority of them have absolutely no character what so ever. They are unmemorable. In the symphonic camp i could rattle off a bunch: maze of time, magic pie, district 97, sky architect, knight area. For some reason, TFK stand out. It's character and personal taste, I guess, but MOR is MOR.

Despite my love of Unfold the Future as a whole, I never really cared for the addition of Daniel Gildenlow. I will admit, it's partially a preconceived notion. Pain of Salvation is such an angry / negative act and The Flower Kings is obviously pretty positive. My preconceived notion was that Gildenlow would bring them down as a band, and this kind of bore out with Adam and Eve. I like them both (Gildenlow and TFK) separate, but no together.
I can be hit and miss with Beardfish, specifically "Destined Solitaire" was awful and crass to me on it's first listening. I didn't care for it at all. I've either liked or loved everything else from them though. I'll probably give Destined Solitaire another listen when I'm in the right mood, but I didn't like it from the beginning.
He has a great bluesy voice. It kind of pains me at times to hear of him considering changing things based on his critics. They're obviously a huge band (in the prog rock circles at least), I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 'in general, more people like his vocals / writing style / lyrical content than don't, don't let the vocal minority have more weight than the vast majority.' (or something to that effect)

'ello Roland!
great points. i'm the exact same way with daniel. i hate to say it, but the daniel tunes on UtF may have been better served by having hasse sing them. in fact, i wonder if there was any bad blood between daniel and hasse. daniel did kind of come in a take some of his parts. as far as adam and eve go, that album would've been a masterpiece if the the daniel tunes were not on there and Driver's Seat had a different arrangement. the intro to that song is so damn awesome. i wish they'd come back into it at some point and had roine or hasse sing the part daniel did. i'm not complaining though, i love that song. i too wonder about roine and his concern about fans and critics. f**k 'em as far as i'm concerned. he has to follow his muse. our opinions are really none of his business. it's just us wasting time on PA! i gotta say, i am very curious about what's coming this year record wise. |

The Wolverhampton gig has been moved to the larger Wolfrun Hall - in the same building as the Slade Rooms I believe - tickets must be selling fast!

I don't know if there was a rift between those two specifically but my understanding is that the separation was partly due to Daniel's absolute refusal to play in the United States. . . . and yeah, I find myself in a weird position at times. I review albums on here, sometimes negatively but at the same time, I would never want an artist to change what they do based on anything that I say. For instance, I wrote a review of 'Black Clouds' years ago and was critical of Mr. Portney's growly Opeth style vocals. I would be mortified if he read it and actually changed something as a result. (mind you, I think there is little chance of that happening but you get my point). I guess my great summary here . . . if you're reading this Mr. Stolt, keep doing what you're doing, the vast majority of us love it. My case in point, over the years of this thread we've had various 'what's your favorite FK album' questions thrown out there and each and every album has had at least one vote as a favorite from someone. Some will whine about every release but there are a lot more of us that love them.

See, as far as Daniel is concerned, I think the songs he sings on A&E are the only redeeming qualities of that album (well, the title track isn't great, but I like it a whole lot better than Cosmic Circus or the opening epic). Driver's Seat might have been better with a different arrangement though, agree with that. Of course, I'm not really a fan of Hasse's vocals, when it comes right down to it. He's gotta a lot more shrill over the years, to my ears......though I think he and Roine do sound great together. I would have been fine with Daniel replacing Hasse, but I doubt most other fans would agree (and really, I'm not sure that would have worked out very well in the long haul anyway). Also, Roine invited Daniel into the group and wrote parts for him to sing, so I don't think there was any bad blood at all (judging from Hasse's facebook posts and other writings, he's a very easy going guy). I honestly don't think Hasse would have sung those parts as well as Daniel did. On the Carpe Diem live album, Roine and Hasse attempt to cover Daniel's vocals on A Vampire's View. They do okay, I guess, but Hasse is really straining on the "powerful" parts, and it's not pretty (to my ears, anyway). Roine's the best singer in TFK's, for my money, though I would never say Hasse is "bad" by any stretch. I just find that with each new album, I find his vocals less appealing (though I still think he sounds fantastic on Retropolis, Stardust We Are, Flower Power and Space Revolver.......after that is when he slowly started to grate on my ears more with each album). |

[/QUOTEroine might read this. he lurks on the yahoo group and posts. i could never do that if i were a known artist. as far as growling goes, talked to this dude working at a local book shop who had an opeth shirt on...i told him i didn't like the growls and was happy with their newest album. he went on and on about their movement away from black metal. i just walked away as he kept talking. man, those opeth fans.
