Django Unchained.
I'm guessing Tarantino had plenty of time to re-examine the nature of his latest work. The scenes of torturing and humiliating black men - that's just a little excessive, as I felt it ... even if that's how things actually used to roll back in the day. Was all that supposed to make me feel uncomfortable? Let's hope not. And yes, you'll see some flesh and blood, as this is classic Tarantino, and it's not like he is going to ease up on that aspect. Something else I want to say: some parts of the film confused me a little. SPOILER ALERT. How could the mining company cavalry fall into Django's trick? And how did a black man (S. L. Jackson) get to be so "white"? I think the best part about the whole movie is the story of revenge itself ... even if it was a little hard to buy into. I just have one big question about the film: where is all this excellence and profundity that permeate Pulp Fiction.

Case 39
Predictable and endlessly talky terror-thriller with Renée Zellweger as a social worker who comes to the aid of a young girl whose parents are trying to kill her...until we learn the horrifying truth! Another Evil Incarnate movie with a lot of mood but nothing really interesting to say. |

"Paranormal Activity 4"
I love a good ghost story and willingly admit to being a fan of these, though I'm not really big on the whole "found footage" phenomenon. The first 2 had some great moments that truly startled and entertained me. The third was fun, expanding the story. And this last one fits in perfectly, filling in more story. It's the least unsettling of the series, but still offered a few good creepy moments and situations. |

Saw "Reservoir Dogs" and it was pretty great.
I'd say my second favorite Tarantino behind Inglourious Basterds, which after watching again may be a top movie for me, brilliant. Edited by JJLehto - January 20 2013 at 22:34 |

Silver Linings Playbook.
Not bad at all. Everyone did a good job acting, especially Jennifer Lawrence, who gave me this impression that she was very committed to her role. Overall, the film was engaging all the way through, and that is goo-oo-OOd. A comidrama it is, and it is solid on both halves.
However, here is what I do not understand: why does the scriptwriter/novelist think that we should buy into the idea that love is the cure to the protagonist's mental illness? BS. What this man needs is medication, whether he likes it or lumps it. Plus, how did it come to Tiffany to do the research about Eagles and Cowboys? She's not even into this stuff. How convenient for her. What a cheap way for the writers to resolve the argument. These things simply render the script as somewhat weak. That is my main "complaint". The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow's tense and caustic mood-movie is successful at dialing down the day-to-day activities of EOD soldiers in Iraq circa '04 and provides a whiff of the 'boredom punctuated by terror' aspect of war. Believable in one sense, wholly unreal in another, Hurt Locker is an engaging and original bit of speculative fiction. |

The Three Stooges
Miserable, almost unwatchable farce from 2012 about the Fine Brothers that combines biography with satire in the manner of a series of Stooges short films. Edited by Atavachron - January 26 2013 at 19:58 |

Nope, still a virgin. That said, I do still watch Pokemon films and yet I'm 3 years over the legal drinking age. |

The Passion of Joan of Arc, epic silent French movie from 1927. Amazing. Every day I see more and more how some things have been lost nowadays in the art of making movies. This masterpiece centers only in the trial and execution of the maiden, with acting that reaches unbelievable heights, especially H Falconetti, who plays the best Joan in cinema. The movie deals with a lot of difficult territories and subjects. Just as with Caligari and Metropolis, I was left in awe of true creative filmmaking.
