First of all, I have to say I already know lots of prog metal/post metal/tech metal listed on PA, but I'm looking for some I'm not familiar with. Without listing all the bands I know/like, I will say of the three subs I enjoy 'Progressive Metal' the least and 'Tech/Extreme Prog Metal' the most. So, if anyone suggests something I already know I will mention that.

I'm looking for something that sounds similar to this:



...but sounds nothing like this:

You've most likely heard of these guys before, if not:

Some of the weirder Prog Metal out there - not really Tech, more laced with Avant and Industrial elements. Kind of remind me on Nine Inch Nails in a way. Not too big of a fan, but still a great band. They did a killer Schizoid cover though. Thumbs Up

how in the world are Necrophagist progressive music in the slightest? I would argue they are the antithesis of progressive music. As soon as you turn on any song you know exactly where it's going - nowhere.

- I liked that Kobong track; need to check their albums out. 

- That Ketha song sounded a little too much like Meshuggah (whom I can take in small doses but am not a huge fan of).

- The Neuma track was interesting. Sounds like a modified sax (or trumpet?) in there.

- The Thordendal track was alright, not really what I'm looking for though.

- I'm vaguely familiar with Praxis. They are not listed on PA but another Praxis from Mexico is in Eclectic Prog. I do need to check them out more as I am a fan of a lot of the musicians who collaborate on that project. 

- Vaura I have heard a lot about recently. Without looking which sub they were in I could tell they were 'Experimental/Post Metal'; they have a noticeable indie/alternative influence (which a lot of post rock in general does) in their music. Not quite as 'heavy' as I was expecting, I need to listen to more for their stuff for it to 'sink in'.

Well, I know they're not in the database here, but man, there are tons of bands of the top of my head that should rightfully be here, but aren't deemed "Progressive" by popular conventions and perspective, or are at least not Genesis and Yes rip-offs. Tongue Cool Necrophagist, well in my opinion at least, are very unconventional in the context of their musicianship. I mean, their approach and composition is rather the same and unvaried for a so called "Progressive group", but dude, those guys can PLAY. That's got to at least count for some sort of unique attribute when compared to music outside of a Progressive or Experimental domain, you know? Maybe they're not Prog Meta per se, but anybody that's a fan of the style and musicianship, would love these guys.

so if a band has technical playing you consider them progressive? i just don't see how Necrophagist are progressive in any sense. They play extremely cliche and predictable technical death metal. I guess it might seem unconventional compared to music that's not technical or related to death metal but in the death metal spectrum Necrophagist are very safe and typical

ooh on that note i just remembered this



I definitely consider this progressive (check all three parts since it got split up on youtube), very cool atmospheric black metal which experiments outside of the black metal realm yet still stays true to the sound and feel of the genre as opposed to some other bands who tend to take the black metal aesthetics of lo-fi distorted guitars, shrieked vocals, and pummeling drumming and just play whatever music they want and call it "progressive black metal"

One of my favorites when it comes to prog metal. Stunning Italian black/doom metal

No of course not, but wouldn't you say the technicality of musicianship though, is rather unique compared to most modern metal, and specifically death metal bands? I mean, it's of course in the same vulgar style as a lot of the bands within the field, but they're belting out riffs and solos I'd hear in BTBAM's music, or Cynic's for that matter - quite a bit more intricate, and creative. Yes, within their own genre, they're a pretty typical sounding band, but a representative band for sure though. Hey, I just thought I'd post them just to give a glimpse for someone who hasn't, but anybody that's into the more technical side of metal, would of course know them. Dude, I respect your opinion and perspective, and I see where you're coming from, and I actually mostly agree with you, but I think they have a lot of experimental qualities for metal that would deem them qualified for some sort of Progressive status. Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth and Blotted Science are examples of Progressive (Death) Metal bands. Necrophagist is NOT. especially when you compare them to the bands I mentioned.

Sort of Mathcore pioneers - big influence on Dillinger for sure. Man, I wish these guys were still around. Great, great band.

Another great band that's sadly disbanded.

I still have to disagree. I used to be incredibly into extreme metal and death metal and tech death in specific and I just find Necrophagist as run-of-the-mill as it gets.

Even in that small niche of flashy weedly-weedly tech death there's a lot more progressive stuff around



and there's also the case of things like Atheist, who were playing technical and rather progressive death metal a good decade before anything like Necrophagist was around

- I've heard of Shining but never got around to checking their music out yet. Not bad, need to do more research.
 
- I've only heard of Necrophagist and how some modern bands supposedly sound like them. Sound like typical technical death metal.

Giant Squid
Ihsahn
Leprous
Protest the Hero
 
Familiar with these ones. I think I've tried a few songs by Between The Buried And Me but don't remember much about them. I'll look into the others.
 
- The Brulvahnatu track was pretty intense. Not sure what to think of it but I'll check out the other parts.
 
- Necromass was pretty good, nothing I haven't really heard before.
 
- Skyharbor didn't really do it for me, not my cup of tea.
 
- Darkwater is more vanilla symphonic prog metal which I'm not a big fan of.
