Too bad for the fans. I'm not a fan, but I know the feeling. From what I understand, Omar R-L has his hands in a dozen other projects at any given time, so you can be sure he will still compose and put things out. I don't know much about Cedric's extracurricular activity, but I'd say don't count him out either.

I luckily got to see them play pieces from Noctoruniquet and Bedlam when they opened for Soundgarden a few years back. They will be missed definitely. Although, Bosnian Rainbows should be an excellent project, still nothing close to The Mars Volta. TMV for life.

Omar's banging Terri. They been working on stuff together a while now, right after he quit working with Ximena. He's obviously just trying to have a good time and get mad laid. They'll be back as TMV as soon as him and Teri break up.

Bad Bad news. I saw them twice in concert, two incredible shows: powerful and frenzy, with some mad impros. And the first time it lasted three hours!

It's right up there with Deloused for me. As for the band breaking up, I'm not too worried. They (Cedric & Omar) have been working together for a long time, I can see them going off and working on other projects for a couple of years and then putting something new out, either as TMV or some other project. It's probably good for them both to be doing different things and trying different styles of music. Hopefully it'll make for even better albums from them in the future, and until then, I can just keep listening to the TMV albums I have now.

Just think if it wasn't for the Mars Volta many of you under 25 year old folks would not be on here right now or discover this wonderful music genre. But it is sad they broke up. They were talented and some would say one of the few bright hopes for the future of prog. Prog needs more high profile bands like the TMV.

Octahedron may be my favorite because I was late to the Mars Volta party. Noctourniquet is great too.
To be honest, Deloused isn't as great when you start at the last album and go backward. It's good, don't get me wrong, but...oh well I said all that in my review anyway.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

There's a good chance they'll be back. So many bands hang it up or go on hiatus, then we see them again surprise surprise.....with the popular bands a "reunion" is good payday.

I was just getting in to them, so I'm sorry to see they're breaking up. But I'll bet they'll get back together at some pont, as has been mentioned before in this tread, as TMV or something else. In the meantime there's not much to do than to sit back and enjoy the great music they've already created. Oh, that reminds me, I have to get hold of there last two albums! Soon...

Kind of to be expected after their hiatus thing was announced. I don't mind since all it really means is that Omar will be without Cedric, and his solo output has pretty much proven he doesn't need him THAT much.
Sucks though, since they were the first prog band I really liked, and my first real musical obsession.

That was not the case for me though

Or me That was Dream Theater. But maybe for others........ I actually didn't care much for TMV when I was new to prog in early 2005.

Same here. Saw them at The Forum in LA. Awesome live show from both bands.

I am disappointed in this news. Although I agree they've been steadily declining, I've still been looking forward to their releases.
So...I've been aware of Omar's numerous side projects, but I haven't checked them out yet, in part because there are so many. I've been reluctant because I've found that usually when an artist sh*ts out project after project the quality usually suffers. I was content just to follow The Mars Volta, but, well...Anyway, is any of his stuff worth checking out? I'm looking for prog, not pop, and after listing to that Bosnian Rainbows single I can already tell that that band is not for me. But I'm willing to check out whatever. Or Cedrick's thing for that matter. < ="" id="triggerLogout">

Quite disappointing news, but we have 6 six absolutey remarkable albums by them. Well, Amputecture has some bigger letdowns, but it's still pretty good. At least they split without releasing a weak album.

Definitely bad news, I think they were one the better bands from recent years.
I'm happy I had the chance to see them live six months ago in Israel when they opened the tour for Noctourniquet. That wasn't a good show, they weren't in good shape. The show contained a lot if improvised jamming but not good ones anyway. The last song was a slow version of Goliath, it just showed they weren't ready yet or didn't care about playing there. Still I'm happy I saw them.

I love Deloused and Francis. Those two albums blew my mind the first time I heard them, and I still haven't heard anything else like them (including from The Mars Volta's discography ). I think their most recent album sounded like they needed a break, but hopefully they'll get back together at some point. I've never seen them live, but I really want to.
