Hi,

Of all the work I have ever heard, I still am most fond of the bootleg stuff ... there is no better history of a person, or artist, than what you hear in there, and what it tells you about the individuals ... from hearing different things in the sound effects jumble to hearing Roger get mad at fans, to hearing Dave trip out really well, when the music "hits" as he says in the movie when he did his first solo album with the Manfred Mann's Earth Band backing him (gotta find that DVD again! .... it was excellent!)

For 30 some years, I loved hearing "Raving and Drooling" and the final version, which was NOT the "next" PF album after Dark Side, which was a massive disappointment when we heard it ... While WYWH was nice, it was a copy of Dark Side with one or two cuts telling you they hate the machine, and then Roy giving you the English Oxford/Cambridge styled humor by tell you to have a cigar now that you are a rich man and you can club with us! I personally do not care, or enjoy the rest of the album at all!

The 10 different versions of Atom Heart Mother, including the one that was used with the Ballet that crashed ... that gave us the Jethro Tull cover ... telling us that the old crap is dead!  The correlation was magnificent ... both the balet group and Pink Floyd got trashed senseless ... the ballet group for wasting its talent and the group for not being a classical composer ... and now you know why that cover is so important and the work is even more representative than anything else about the arts at the time ... and where they were going. Classical music has been going downhill for 25 years ... and the numbers for rock and other popular music acts has gone sky higher yet! We're not likely to find/hear another Pavarotti in our times!

Of all th esolo albums, the one I remember the most ... is ... Fictitious Sports ... because things like "Mineralist" or "Can't Get the Motor to Start" ... do not fall away from your imagination ... and the double entendre in the motor piece is fantastic and the girls milk it senseless! The other album I love dearly is Richard's first solo album, Wet Dream ... where the saxophone did all the guitar lead parts! That is not to say that there is not a spacial spot in my heart for "Amused to Death", which there is ... but all in all ... I still think of Echoes/Atom Heart Mother ... as the band I love the most ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Anyway this was the closest I came, after having looked through about a gazillion pages worth of threads.

I just realised now, that Rick Wright is dead. I know, 2008 and it's not like I didn't register it either, but tonight I listened to More walking outside in the darkness, and it dawned on me during freakin goosebumps city - just how much this man's music means to me. How much his keys, synths and perhaps my all-time fave the farfisa, were the soundtrack of my life. I know every lead of his by heart, and his fragile vocals often paired up with him playing a raw piano were often some of my favorite happy and strangely British moments on those early Floyd albums.
Too much man.... I swear, I felt like weeping for a week.

Thank you for the music Rick.

I am putting Cirrus Minor on again in your honor
I know what you mean. I found out about his passing only about a year after it happened. I was a bit bummed out.

Here's an interesting one from Bruno Macdonald's book on the band (from the entry on "Paintbox"): Rick once said (it was not indicated when, though) that his singing skills were unsatisfying (or something to the effect of that). When I read it I thought "Oh, please! I know you sung the song, but can you really say this?" I just love his singing on the early stuff ... pf, hell ... on all of Floyd's stuff, especially lead.

Rick was also very critical of his songwriting skills, disowning the early songs that he wrote alone. Undoubtedly, he did his best work as a team player, but still a song like "Remember a Day" (naive as it is) is nothing to be ashamed of. Compared to the kind of stuff his bandmates occasionally dished out in that 1968-1970 phase, I think he had the least reason to be ashamed. And his singing is brilliant, especially in harmony with the other guys. But I guess Rick was always the 'modest one'.

I have to say dear Rick is why I love Floyd soooo much.  He has got a magic touch - some of those chords he plays, his Farfisa sounds, man, something like the wicked build-up on Set The Controls live is totally mind-blowing.  And when he comes in with the mini-moog after all the wind stuff on Shine On part 6 with Waters' flanged bass churning away - wow - I gotta go.........

I love the group too, sometimes I have intense listening experiences, especially now with the discovery of Yeeshul! Which is a nice database website for the Floyds audio and video stuff.   One of the things that should have been released when John Peels Strange Fruit series started was the Paris Theatre sessions from 1970 / 71, great live versions of Embryo and Echoes that sit nicely along with Pompeii and Meddle.  If you can try and seek out the BBC transcription disc 152509-1 152510-2, this features an unbelievable version of Echoes with the sustain left on, it is worth seeking out and hearing.  There are many youtube clips with extracts from these performances, you should check them out.

One of my all-time favorite, "desert island" albums is Pink Floyd's Animals. I'm always mildly disappointed with the knowledge that, in light of albums like Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here and even Piper at the Gates of Dawn, (all albums that I adore, along with the rest of the Floyd discography,) it appears that Animals often gets overlooked. Perhaps it's the lack of radio-friendly material (DSotM has "Time," "Money," "Breathe," "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage/Eclipse," The Wall has too many great, radio-friendly tracks to count, Wish You Were Here has the well-known title track, and even Piper has some well-known tracks,) or perhaps it's the fact that there are only two tracks on it that are under two minutes, but...I dunno. Animals has always been special to me. With that said, I'm very happy to see that I'm not the only one on here who considers Animals their favorite.

Oh, and it took me forever to get into their earlier, psychedelic period. But I now know better, and consider A Saucerful of Secrets one of the greatest albums ever.

Nice adaptation of the Animals cover Clap

To me, Floyd had the best trio in a row and blew me away when they came out one after the other.  Dark Side, then Wish You Were Here, and after that Animals....awesome.

Only after I decided to draw this I realized that the album actually has a real building on it (Battersea Station) thus tried my best to draw it to the best I could  Smile again thank you very much, I appreciate this. Everything was drawn using primitive paint (not to be mistaken with paint.net program) and this comes standard with microsoft office, found on accessories Embarrassed this said nothing is copied, everything on this nose spilling drawing was hand-drawn LOL hahahaha sorry H_To_He, but you made me laugh so much with that remark of yours lololol Big smile

The lost period of Syd Barrett which was just prior to him being sacked from the band. Songs like "Scream Thy Last Scream", "Vegetable Man", Jugband Blues etc...was a strange and dark period of the band. I was deeply interested in the short lived period when Roger Waters and Ron Geesin were working together releasing Music From the Body and of course the sections Geesin scored for Atom Heart Mother. They were both interested in Electronic music and the 20th century Avant-Garde American composers of that time. I greatly appreciated their experimentation during that time period. "Several Species of Small Furry Animals" by Waters was influenced by the work of Ron Geesin. A piece titled "Leave The Driving to Us" from Mort Garson's "The Wozard Of Is" seemed to influence the style of "On The Run" from D.S.O.T.M. There are many observations to make.

YES! YES!!!YES YES YES YES YEAAAGH!
Toddler you are a bleeping inspiration to this site!! I genuinely mean that. Not only did you just mirror my own personal thoughts on the Floyd/Geesin connection, but you did so from a wonderfully insightful perspective as well: a true fan of music itself and what it is able to achieve at times.

I have a huge workload in front of me currently, which makes me use up all my spare time on filling out forms and writing lord knows how many observations down, which means I have little or zero time to spend on my favourite thing: music and talking to likeminded spirits, but when I just now, by coincidence, stumbled over your post, I just thought you deserved your own special shout out from a true fan of yours. This is David from Denmark acknowledging a fellow lover of music. Here's to you man, you just made my evening!
“The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”

Surely I can't be the only one who absolutely despises the pre-Atom Heart era. Everything up to The Wall is amazing though.
