Pink Floyd Appreciation Thread

I know what you mean. I found out about his passing only about a year after it happened. I was a bit bummed out.

I have to say dear Rick is why I love Floyd soooo much.  He has got a magic touch - some of those chords he plays, his Farfisa sounds, man, something like the wicked build-up on Set The Controls live is totally mind-blowing.  And when he comes in with the mini-moog after all the wind stuff on Shine On part 6 with Waters' flanged bass churning away - wow - I gotta go.........

One of my all-time favorite, "desert island" albums is Pink Floyd's Animals. I'm always mildly disappointed with the knowledge that, in light of albums like Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here and even Piper at the Gates of Dawn, (all albums that I adore, along with the rest of the Floyd discography,) it appears that Animals often gets overlooked. Perhaps it's the lack of radio-friendly material (DSotM has "Time," "Money," "Breathe," "Us and Them" and "Brain Damage/Eclipse," The Wall has too many great, radio-friendly tracks to count, Wish You Were Here has the well-known title track, and even Piper has some well-known tracks,) or perhaps it's the fact that there are only two tracks on it that are under two minutes, but...I dunno. Animals has always been special to me. With that said, I'm very happy to see that I'm not the only one on here who considers Animals their favorite.

Oh, and it took me forever to get into their earlier, psychedelic period. But I now know better, and consider A Saucerful of Secrets one of the greatest albums ever.

The lost period of Syd Barrett which was just prior to him being sacked from the band. Songs like "Scream Thy Last Scream", "Vegetable Man", Jugband Blues etc...was a strange and dark period of the band. I was deeply interested in the short lived period when Roger Waters and Ron Geesin were working together releasing Music From the Body and of course the sections Geesin scored for Atom Heart Mother. They were both interested in Electronic music and the 20th century Avant-Garde American composers of that time. I greatly appreciated their experimentation during that time period. "Several Species of Small Furry Animals" by Waters was influenced by the work of Ron Geesin. A piece titled "Leave The Driving to Us" from Mort Garson's "The Wozard Of Is" seemed to influence the style of "On The Run" from D.S.O.T.M. There are many observations to make.
