Totally agree Michael.....it took me a while to warm to it, but it really is their masterpiece, their grand opera if you will.  Pillow is also a classic in a different way.  Crown of Creation is quite a dropoff for me despite the fantastic last song.

Jim, `Baxters' took ages to get my head around, it's so much more experimental, involved and heavy-going than any of the previous albums (as much as I truly love them!), but man it sizzles with so much energy, and Grace is at her best on that one too! So confident and arrogant, I love it!

You know what....I really struggle with `Crown of Creation' too, I can't work out what it is. I keep waiting to all of a sudden have it fall into place....If I recall I much prefer `Volunteers' and `Bless It's Pointed Little Head' more?

Grace is incredible on Baxters, though unfortunately Marty was a bit dejected.  But the others picked up the slack.  Crown just sounds so tired....it's the hangover from Baxters.  I too think Volunteers was a comeback of sorts, a better try than CoC.

I've never heard Bless in full!Embarrassed

`Bless It's Pointed Little Head' (man, I dig that title!) is not one you'll play over and over, BUT almost all the tracks they perform on it sound totally reworked or different from the studio versions, so it really stands on it's own. I also have a totally pristine LP that plays and looks beautiful! Got it many years ago and in some ways it's one of the great prides of my collection!

I remember reading a few reviews years ago and nearly falling over when several of them said `Baxters' was lazy jamming and totally unfocused. As much as I love `S.Pillow', it's always bugged me a little how it's considered their absolute defining statement (as in, `If you have to own one Airplane album, make it this one' etc!). I mean, stuff like `Comin' Back To Me', `Today' are amazing, but there's the odd slight dud on there too?!

Yeah it's true, though you have to cut Pillow a little slack because it was '66....it was bound to have some quaint stuff on there.  Though even on some of those tracks Jorma's biting guitar sounds revolutionary for the time.

Don't get me wrong, Jim, I love that album, and especially that charming debut album too! The CD version has one of my favourite tracks `High Flyin' Bird', even if they didn't have Grace in the band yet.

Hey, before I run the risk of a `back on topic' flag , just listening to `Baxters' now...Man, I forgot how ragged and messy some of the group harmonies are, so wild and unhinged!! HOW MIND-BLOWING is that vaccuum/explosion sound the guitar makes about half-way into `The Last Wall Of The Castle' - OK, you describe it better, I'm struggling here! You know the bit I mean, right?!

I do know that part!  It is hard to describe....the whole album has such a sense of freedom, it breathes youth.  It's very hard, I've been trying to review that thing for quite some time and I can't seem to do it justice.  I personally feel its as good as Piper or Sgt Pepper....though I know not too many will agree with thatLOL

I've never owned the very first album.....I'd best change that!
