Roj:
okay, i'll check them out. i've only dabbled in the ambient stuff and just stumbled upon BoC when researching Eno. i know the name FSoL, but never really listened to them. Will do that soon. BTW, did you ever hear that Orb album with David Gilmour? wonder if that's any good. C

Craig,
I have a copy of the Orb / Gilmour album and it's good at times, though as most ambient is, not overly catchy. I haven't had the chance to sit down and listen to the whole thing on headphones as of yet, though that may happen over the next week now that it's on my mind. |

The FSOL album on my list is mostly (but certainly not all) ambient, a really classy piece of work. It's very atmospheric and relaxing, and it's my favourite of theirs. I think they would not be out of place in PA as Prog Electronic. FSOL are almost orchestral in the way they build soundscapes. I'm a little surpised the Electronic Team rejected them Of the others on my list, most are a bit more uptempo than BoC but definitely of the same ilk. Plaid in particular I find wonderful. I tend to not like everything they do but there's always so many fantastic tracks on each album. I think If the electronic instruments used in Plaid's music were replaced by bass, drums and guitars they would sound like a prog band for sure. Yes, I've got The Orb/Dave Gilmour album. It's pretty good, but I think it does tend to drag a little after a while. Some great lazy hazy guitar playing on there as you'd expect from Gilmour, over pretty relaxed beats. Overall it would probably appeal to fans of The Orb more than Floyd. As a fan of both, I'm happy ![]() Enjoy. |

Well, to be fair, I've heard very little. What I did hear I did not enjoy. However, I've never given an entire album a "fair" listen, and it's been a while since I heard anything (I think I listed to a couple of the In Rainbows tracks back when it was released). I should probably at least give OK Computer another go, since it's been years since I heard a few tracks from that one and didn't like it. |

I listened to OK computer as I was sent a lot of their stuff as MP3....completeley underwhelmed as I was - I really couldn't see why it was lauded as a masterpeice....... I have far more deserving music to lend my ear to.......I have taken delivery of one of the two Nexus CD's that I ordered......so I have a real dial-Emma on Friday night - Nexus or "Keyholder"......might listen to em both I suppose....n Back to the original argument - anybody who could prefer OK Computer to anything that Lalo Huber has composed is not a true Symphonic prog appreciator.......The sound when he defacates would be more prog than RH.... ![]() Edited by M27Barney - January 15 2013 at 08:02 |

I just have the one Nexus album (the one you just got), as well as their contributions to the Colossus projects. Not really inspired to try anything else, though I would like to try one of their albums with the woman vocalist, as I find the male vocals decidedly weak. Which is probably my main reason for not exploring more, as the Hammond playing is generally quite enjoyable. Which one of those early albums would you recommend? |

@Roland, Roj-i've heard a bit of the gilmour orb thing. david just sounded he was noodling and not really ripping any solos. like you, i need to get it and sit down with it. i really love BoC because they have a very hazy analog sound kind of like my bloody valentine. that constant slight movement off key. it sounds like the tape's bent. not to mention the cover's. love 'em. it's fun to imagine riding through the world in the mid 70s with record stores, new highways, sparsness and no big box stores ruining the landscape.
@barney-i think ok computer was seen as a masterpiece because it was an anomoly in the 90s. a well produced album of songs and some sonic experiementation that didn't sound like the 80s and didn't sound like grunge. i like the song airbag and paranoid android. infandous-have you heard that organ.drum thing from the main dude from beardfish called Bootcut? i'm curious about that. i love the clean, yet phat organ sound on the beardfish albums. out...

Listening to Neal Morse always makes me realize I enjoy the Flower Kings more. Same thing happens when i listen to Karmakanic, Agents of Mercy, Spock's Beard, etc. Transatlantic and (usually) The Tangent are almost equal to TFK.

Yes indeed. The tracks I like most from the CD my mate gave me are mostly on In Rainbows. ![]() |

i think i agree with you. are you saying that TFK kind of stand out from all those other bands? if so, you're right. i'm not a huge tangent fan. the ones that get close to TFK in my mind are Karmakanic and to a lesser extent TA,

Well I've been finding that Karmakanic's most recent album to be their least best one. The first two are like TFK with jazzier sound and more metal influence, and Who's the Boss? found a nice balance while lessening the jazz aspect. IAPW was kind of hit or miss, but the epic was superb. I always liked The Tangent, and sometimes feel like it's a band that does Unfold The Future every time (not to make it sound like the repeat themselves, they have definitely evolved since the first 2 albums; in fact, their most recent album is the farthest away from TFK). TFK is still a little better than The Tangent though. I guess it's because I enjoy their jazzier side more than some fans do.

darkshade, I love the jazzier side of the Flower Kings, and especially love the Zappa influence (both of which are almost completely absent from Banks, IMO)
The Tangent is the closest in quality to TFK for me. TA is probably the closest in style. Actually, if we want to talk about which side band or project comes closest to TFK all around, I would say Tomas Bodin's solo albums for sure (especially the last two.......I still think of You Are as a Tomas solo album). Karmakanic is consistently my least favorite FK side project, though the second album is killer and certainly up to the quality of a FK album. I only got IAPW fairly recently, and while it's not bad, there is nothing on it that really does anything for me, even the long track I find somewhat dull and uninteresting. |

Start with this one. 3 CD's, 9 tracks. Some are great, some not as great, but all are enjoyable to me. http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=10592 This is the other one that Nexus is on: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23458 Honestly, I've liked all the Colossus Project albums that I've heard. They can be pricey, but in general are a good deal as you get a variety of prog bands on one album, most of them are filled with epics. |

The Tangent is one of best bands out there that are symphonic-related. I label as symphonic seeing i don't believe jazz influences is enough to make a band "eclectic".
I'll prolly end up diving back into TFK to try them yet again to see if my tastes allow.

It's funny because Karmakanic's "Who's The Boss...?" is the album that warmed me up to exploring TFK's music furhter. Before that, I only knew Space Revolver and The Sum Of No Evil, both of which I appreciated more as I got to know TFK more.
I was getting TFK and Tangent albums at the same time, and Karmakanic too. With lineups overlapping all those bands, it was hard for me to figure out the better bands. Since the dust has settled these past couple of years, TFK just shines brighter every time. But, it may be time to throw on some Tangent soon. Austin, good to see you still follow this thread. Nothing wrong with giving TFK another shot, it took me 4 or 5 tries over the course of a few years before I started to really like TFK.
