I got zero albums for Christmas.........but I never do because no one knows what to get me.  I could give a list, I suppose, but I usually get all the easy to find stuff before Christmas for myself so I don't want to have to give instructions along with the list.  I just buy them for myself the rest of the year.  So you guys are lucky to get any.

I'm still sad to say that Banks is not my favorite album of the year, and far from my favorite Flower Kings album.  Maybe in a year or two it will grow on me more (like A&E did, even though it's still my least favorite of theirs), but for now I'm just finding it mostly a big disappointment.........and I've been a huge fan of this band since 1999.  Oh well, hopefully the next one will do it for me more.

I actually haven't heard all that many 2012 releases, so I'm not sure what I would call my favorite of the year (have to look at what I have).  Right now, Beardfish's "Destined Solitaire" is the best prog album I've heard in 10 years at least.  Absolutely love it.  Mammoth is very good as well.  Have to get the latest one ASAP.

In the past my family solved this by not getting me actual physical albums.
Nowadays I just ask for clothes since I have too little fashion sense to get good stuff myself.
(and I don't care)

I haven't got many 2012 albums to be honest, but of those I have Banks of Eden is easily my album of the year.  So count me in with Tom and Darkshade on this Thumbs Up.

Whilst Porcupine Tree's Octane Twisted is well worthy of mention (the DVD on the special edition I have is great Big smile) the new ones by Marillion and Big Big Train are the only studio albums that come remotely close to BOE.

See, I got Destined Solitaire for Christmas and really didn't care for it on my first listen, I'm obviously going to have to give it a few more listens (without the child in the car) but on my first go, I really was unimpressed.  The first half sounded mostly like the weird fills / sections that they do without balancing it out with the melodic sections.

I love Sleeping in Traffic, especially part one, mostly for the inclusions of odd sections in something that is mostly melodic.  To me, so far, Destined Solitaire is the opposite, the inclusion of melodic sections in something that is mostly chaotic.

I'm hoping that further listens will help me appreciate it cause I hate wasting money / presents on something I don't like.

In fact, I gave Banks of Eden a serious listen this morning and will finish it up tonight, but there will be a review in short order and I've decided that it's merited a five star rating.

I got Destined Solitaire as a birthday present a couple of months back and was decidedly underwhelmed on the as yet only listen I've given it.  I have SIT 1 and 2 and think both are great.  I'm sure further listens will help but to date I've not been minded to return to it such is the surfeit of other new music I have to listen to.

All the very best to all for the new year.

man, from zero activity to a billion posts!  the thread is back!

as far as beard fish goes, is destined solitaire one of their early ones?  i don't own any of theirs but have sleeping in traffic 2 on my wish list.  doesn't their main dude have a bunch of side projects too....gungfly or something.

i also haven't heard that many albums this year.  i tried again with big big train as it's number one here at progarchives.  still no go.  even though andy tillison is on there.

@infandous-thanks for the kaputt recommendation.  i know you've said that's a good one.  are the other random live ones any good?  i'm curious about that jammy one...carpe diem maybe?  as far as getting cds for xmas...this was the first year in decades that i got any.  i could not believe it!  my wife infiltrated my amazon wish list and sent it to family.  the only downside is that i would've bought those cds from our buddy at synphonic...

peace brothers!!

Ok, as a side note, I'm listening to "The Void" on Spotify and I'm digging it a lot more than Destined Solitaire.

Craig, I'm totally digging Big Big Train.

Funny how tastes vary, yet we still like a lot of the same stuff.  My first Beardfish was Sleeping in Traffic Part 1, back when it was released.  It was okay, but I didn't bother to explore their stuff further.  Then about 3 years later I got Part 2, and liked it more, but still not excited by the band.  Someone gave me their copy of The Sane Day (their second album) and I like that one even more.  So recently I picked up Destined Solitaire and Mammoth, both of which I love (though DS is my favorite of them all).  I went back and listened to the two Sleeping in Traffic albums again, and Part 1 is still my least favorite Beardfish, though it's a decent album.  Part 2 I like more than I did the first few times I heard it.

So basically, I've had the exact opposite reaction that you did.  I guess I'm not as impressed or excited by purely melodic stuff............though I have a hard time believing that since there are quite a few album I love that have little in the way of quirky or complex stuff.......some that are not even prog, of course.  Anyway, that's my take on it.  Give me the "mostly chaotic" stuff any day LOL  (though I wouldn't call it chaotic at all, personally).

Carpe Diem is not really essential, and I'm not sure you can still get it anyway.  I like it, but it's an "official bootleg", and it's not a complete concert.  Still, it has some rare live stuff on it that I'm really glad to have.  The "jammy" one I think you are thinking of is the Circus Brimstone live album (the band name they used for the 4 piece instrumental version of TFK).  That is totally essential and a great live album.  I could live without the drum and bass solos, but they are not overly long and of course Jonas is amazing as always.

For Beardfish, DS is not an early album, it came out in 2007 I think, after Sleeping in Traffic Part 2.  Their first was 2002 I think.

Haha and a big whoo-whoo from a decidedly damp but reasonably warm Swinton, Manchester, North West England.
Didn't get many CD's for solstice, I got five but one hasn't got the corrrect CD in it so my mrs is trying to sort it out.
The one's I have got and correct are
Symphony X - Paradise Lost.
Kaipa - Notes from the past.
Kaipa - Mind Revolutions
Jordan Rudess - The Road Home.
I do have quite a lot of monies that I shall splurge on CD's of course.
Banks of Eden is one of the best CD's I have heard this year.....Somebody will tell me that bloody Talk-Talks last two CD's are better !!! Yah-boo-sucks to you...

@Barney-i like the kaipa you got.  i only have Notes.  i need to get more.

@infandous-thanks for the info.  the TFK one i was thinking of was betchawannadancestupid.  circus brimstone is way out of print unfortunately.  as for beardfish, their sound kind of changed a bit after their first two albums and the got signed.  i'd love to see them on some sort of swedish prog tour.  they were the tangent for a while, weren't they?

speaking of tangent, the dudes who were in and recently left have an album coming out in the spring on inside/out.  they are called maschist or something.  i'm excited about that.

I listened to "Notes Frpm the Past" - it gripped me on the first spin - so its a winner.
Just ordered some more CD's - Perpetuum Karma by Nexus - it's like gold-dust - anybody know where I can get this without spending 30 pounds sterling?

ah, thanks darkshade.  i knew all those remasters came out, but not a new one.  i'm going to check this out asap.  oh, and thanks for that post about DT being in the studio.  that kind of turned into a goofy thread.  i thought ADTOE was an incredible album and am really looking forward to the new one....and the tour!!  how about a TFK, DT, Neal Morse tour.

For some reason, I thought you already had that Nexis album (since you seemed to like them so much).  That's actually the only one I have.  You might try Greg Walker at http://synphonic.8m.com/.  The site is more than a bit outdated looking, but you just email him what you want.  If anyone has it, it would be him.  Not sure about price.  Worth a try anyway.  Also, I suspect you will quite enjoy the album.  It's a Hammond lovers dream, that's for sure.

Notes is surely a winner, figured you'd like that one since you like their other albums.

Yeah, skip the betchawanna album.  It's interesting, but I haven't listened to it in probably 7 or 8 years.  It's a curio, at best.  Most of the jams are taken out of actual songs, so it's a bit weird in that regard, as the songs themselves are missing (though a couple of the jams were just that, standalone jams).  I doubt it's available either, anyway.  Of course, I think I have that one ripped on my PC, so I could probably find a way to send it to you if you want.

After the discussion regarding Destined Solitaire last week, me being me I just had to give it another spin, and I'm pleased to advise I enjoyed it much more this time around.  Sure, it's the quirkiest Beardfish album I've heard but it sounded really good, especially track 5 (the title of which escapes me!) which is particularly excellent.  I don't know, perhaps I just wasn't in a Beardfish frame of mind the first time I heard it.......

I also heard Magenta's Metamorphosis for the first time this weekend.  That too made a good impression on first spin, they have a nice vocalist in Christina Booth.

Lastly, I now have tickets for 2 prog gigs over the next few weeks, Hawkwind and Steven Wilson Wink.  Unfortunately Sigur Ros sold out befoe I knew they were even playing Manchester.  Don't think I'll be making the trip down to London to see TFK/Neal Morse.  200 miles each direction for a thursday night gig does not compute.

@Roj,
i find that albums incubate in me and then i revisit them and totally enjoy them.  beard fish is kind of quirky, but they are produced so well.  their main dude is a genius.  i wish they'd tour more.  i'm seeing steven wilson in april....i'm holding out for a tfk/neal tour in the us.  i'd drive 200 miles for it :)

@infandoius,
thanks for the info on betcha.  i 'acquired' a low kbs version to check it out.  nothing amazing.  neat project though.  as much as i love tfk, i'm just not an uber fan that needs every single release.  the main albums do fine for me.

back to work this week.  not too bad.  hope everyone is well.
peace

I saw in advert in the Classic Rock magazine that Caravan are doing gigs in England over the next couple of weeks.  Apparently they are playing Girls Who Grow Plump...
