Woohoo, Merry Christmas to me. Destined Solitaire by Beardfish and Nght by Gazpacho (and Night is an actual physical copy, I've only had a digital one to date).
. . . oh and welcome to the two new guys. Emily, I enjoyed the latest Karmakanic one quite a bit, though in fairness, not quite as much as the one before it. Kevin, I don't know what it is about The Whirlwind, I should like it, I just continually come out of it thinking 'meh'.

@ progkev, glad to see you here. please, post more often! we're a good group. now, i wouldn't take you for such a Transatlantic fan given your avatar :-) i like agents of mercy, but it took a while for me too. i've come to love Nad's voice. as far as All of the Above goes, I've been watching the live versions on youtube and i think they just blow the studio version away. the studio version seems to have some production issues to me with the bass being kind of low and the drums sounding kind of 'far away'. i'm still getting into the other tunes. most of their songs are so damn long. the only songs that really hold my interest all the way through are Duel and Stranger. i just need to take my time with them. the setlist from that Whirld Tour is nuts! @roland, i see what you're saying about TA and Yes. TA is definitely in the Yes vein rather than Genesis. oh, and here are the CDs i got for christmas. not too bad if i do say so myself. TA-Whilrwind(2disc version!) Dream Theater-Change of Seasons Pat Metheny-Trio>00 Liquid Tension-First disc Hasse Froberg-First album

Some impressive cds received there . Now I'm not usually the type who resorts to the "my Dad's bigger than your Dad" line, however, beat this for a list of the CDs I got for Christmas:-
Vangelis - Heaven & Hell Clark - Totems Flare Pink Floyd & others - Zabriskie Point Soundtrack Tangerine Dream - Ricochet B12 - Electro Soma Hogarth/Barbieri - Not The Weapon But The Hand Eddie Jobson - Theme of Secrets The Orb - C Batter C Ashra - New Age of Earth Ian Boddy - Elemental Glass Hammer - Perilous Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene 7-13 Magenta - Metamorphosis Also got the new Steven Wison live dvd too. I hope everybody had a great Christmas/Solstice and didn't eat or drink too much (unlike me!). |

@Zumcraig - Well, refering to the lenght of Transatlantic songs, I am pretty sure that this is mostly Neal's influence. I remember one interview, where he stated that for him Transatlantic is a place where he's able to put all epics he creates. Actually, he even said something like " Song below 10 min shouldn't be considered prog " . Sounds funny, doesn't it ? Anyway, I adore almost every song made by Transatlantic, so I have nothing against it. But for example, new solo record by Neal Morse is cool apart from last song ' World Without End' , which is 33 minutes long but has so many dull moments, and it sounds as if they were made just to increase the lenght of the song. Total exaggeration ! I wish he had focused more on songs like ' Thoughts Part 5 ' .. . Well I guess when TA is making 30 min epic it sounds magnificent, mainly because it consist's of ideas from four great Prog Musicans. It would not have been possible to write such epics without that kind of collaboration. But to give yourself completely into pieces of music made by TA.. well,it requires some time. But it's well worth it :)
P.S - Wow and so many nice presents you all were given ! My list of gifts is shorter than yours but still quite enjoyable : Steven Wilson - Get All Ya Deserve DVD Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning 2x LP Opeth - Heritage 2 x LP Riverside - Reality Dream BOX ( whole discography without ADHD) DT - Scenes From Memory CD Depeche Mode - Ultra ( 1 x LP ) Pink Floyd- DSOTM ( 1 x LP ) Marillion - The Thieving Magpie ( 2 x LP ) .. I will never get use to the absence of Fish. His voice is a massage to my ears lol. And I hate Christmas somehow. I promised to myself not to eat to much, and as always I have eaten all the food that I had, and my fridge is bloody empty. Also stomach ache included.. Wrr ! |

welcome emily!
@prog kev: good points. transatlantic as well TFK requires some attention when getting into new music. like i said above, seeing All of the Above live video kind of helped me get into it more. i do think that TFK, SB, Neal all kind of suffer from filling their epics up with unnecessary junk. what made the classic bands great was what they didn't put in. they chose the best ideas and went with it. the opposite kind of happened with Tales, but it's still pretty good. good melodies are also key. incidentally, i also got SB-kindness of strangers and momentum. i like the epic on there. all the parts are fun and memorable. as far as marillion goes, i've tried and cannot get into them. i've been meaning to pick up Clutching at Straws though. congrats on getting all that vinyl. how fun! i'll be curious to hear how the opeth sounds and what the extras are. i still need to pick up heritage. i'm glad my list got a bit shorter as a result of christmas. Zuma- I hate Tales.. Never got into that album. I've tried so many times and I finally gave up. I think that this conceptual journey wasn't made for me lol. How nice that I can always play "Fragile" or " CTTE" :P
And when it comes to Marillion I have all albums with Fish plus recently received live show and I absolutely adore all of them. But you know, it's still naivy-young-neo-prog, so it's not for everyone of course. You need to have a spark of childhood in yourself haha ! But funny thing is that I don't know any single album Post-Fish except " Sound's That Can't Be Made " which is kinda boring for me. Listened to that album for 5-6 times and I don't remember any single moment. And Opeth now - It is absolutely worth buying and giving Heritage a spin. For me it's a best Opeth album ever. You know, some people had problems to get use to the lack of growls etc. But now, that album grown in the eyes of the fans I guess. Akerfeldt has done something that he should many years ago. He finally released himself from a scheme of making an album which looks like Morbid Angel Sounding Riff/Prog-Soft-Mellow Moments/Growls/Clean Vocals ... He stated many times that he is not into Death Metal anymore for so many years, and he had a dream to do what he loves. And I am happy that he did something he was looking forward too. I've been listening to Opeth for almost 10 years but they never sounded so fresh. Some people did attack " Heritage " for being quite chaotic album, but as far as I am concerned, Akerfeldt had so many ideas that he wanted to finally put into an Opeth album. He mixed so many styles from 70` . Psychodelic Rock , Prog-Folk in roots of Comus, odd Goblin rip-off sick riffs, he implemented a lot of atmosphere taken straight from cinematic horrors and also added a spice of acoustic guitars . Also two bonus songs are incredibly well-done. Very mellow and soothing,.. I think that next Opeth album might be one of the best Prog albums in XXI century. Beside Steven Wilson's " Raven That Refused To Sing " haha. Propably two of my favourite artists. It's funny, when I think that Steven accused Roine that he is the main cause for the Death of Prog, and I still love both artists :) Cheers :) |

progkev,
yeah, heritage is on my list as is the new steven wilson. it's hard to keep up as these dudes put out so much stuff...i'm not complaining though :-) i put akerfeldt up there with wilson, stolt, morse, pattruci. the big guns of prog these days. i have a feeling i'll get into marillion at some point. not today though. btw, does anyone know what keyboards neal morse plays. i know one is some sort of B3 thing. what else.

Just stopping by to say, I LOVE MEET THE FLOWER KINGS !!! The epics are played quite well, a little more energy than their studio counterparts, with some variation and improv too. Love it. Love it. Been listening to the entire catalog chronologically in between my crazy Frank Zappa marathon (seriously, it's been taking up 90% of my listening time over the last couple of months). MTFK is my only live album of theirs, I've been meaning to get another. Recommendations???
I tried a few times to get into Marillion, never could. It's been a while, and I may try just one more time some time soon. As far as Opeth's Heritage, I haven't spun it in a while, but I think it's one of their best albums to date, and I'm very curious to see what direction they go in on future albums. Sooner or later, I'm going to get back into Neal Morse/Spock's beard, since I listened to all the Transatlantic albums recently. Momentum was good, but felt a little weak, and didn't get as many replay listens as Testimony 2 did when it was still the newest album. I remember World Without End was good, but took a real long while to truly understand its greatness. Will have to revisit soon.

I'm sorry, but the climax at the end of Garden of Dreams is the greatest moment in all of TFK's music, possibly of all modern symphonic prog.

I read a couple of reviews saying that the band in Meet The Flower Kings seemed a bit 'tired'. Personally, i liked the excerpts from youtube and i'm going to buy the dvd soon... About Momentum, to me is one of Neal's greatest releases, really enjoyed the epic track and Thoughts pt 5. The other songs are pretty cool too, and I definitely prefer it over Sola or Testimony.

i've read that the day of recording Meet the Flower Kings the band had to run through songs a bunch of times etc. it was a staged DVD rather than a traditional concert. if i had to run through garden of dreams a bunch of times, i'd get tired too. however, the band don't seem tired on the disc and are playing top notch. it is incredible...if only for roine's silver suit!!

BUMP!
been watching some live Transatlantic stuff on youtube. I love watching Pete play and sing. He's great! Wish I could get into more Marillion. I'm curious about what the new TA album will be. My hunch is that it'll be more song oriented with an epic. That's seems to be the mode Roine and Neal are in these days. I'm also curious about the setlist. They surely can't come out and represent all albums. That'd take 5 hours!! I bet they do some sort of Whirlwind medley, Duel, All of the Above and most of the new album. I'm still amazed at the setlist from the Whirldtour. that is nuts! |

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been around as much as of late. I'm envious of all the Transatlantic love, I wish I could get into them, I'd love to love The Whirlwind. I've said this before, I don't really care for Meet the Flower Kings. As others have mentioned, it was a staged show with multiple live takes. Unfortunately, this kills much of the natural energy of both the show and the crowd. I prefer Instant Delivery by far. On an unrelated note, I totally have Banks of Eden as my favorite album of the year.

Maybe when TA4 comes out, you'll be more into them...
When I talk about Meet The Flower Kings, I'm talking about the CDs, I don't have the DVD. i understand the problems faced with this recording behind the scenes, but i love the variations in TTWSYF, GoD, Humanizzimo, and SWA. Having done my first run-through of all the TFK albums since Banks of Eden came out, I can safely say that BoE is still a top 5 TFK album, and fits in snugly next to The Sum of No Evil. In fact, those two albums are great to listen to back to back. Roland, I'm with you on BoE. It's my most enjoyed 2012 release, though I'lll admit The Mars Volta's was more progressive, and Frank Zappa's new one was a big surprise.

i'm warming up to the first TA album. it's taken a while, but it's definitely worth it. i'm still surprised by each change. next is some serious attention to whirlwind. i love that 'T4' that would be a cool name for the album.
what are y'all looking forward to next year? Dream Theater Transatlantic Agents of Mercy 3rd World Electric i'm sure they'll be some surprises. i'm really hoping for a roine solo album at some point. @darkshade, what's the new zappa? |

Yeah, it was a "staged" think, with only about 25 people in the audience. I too though think it's great. Not their best performance I've seen, but that set list makes it absolutely essential. Excellent stuff. Zuma..........get Tour Kaput. Best FK live album of them all, warts and all (well, I have a couple boots that are better, but I'm talking official releases here). It's not a perfect performance but it's real and very awesome. A great set list, provided you like Sum Of No Evil. Instant Delivery is a very solid show, with the band on top form, but not my favorite set list (they truncate the epics.......sacrilege!!). Still, a must own at some point if you are a fan. It's probably the most energetic performance I've seen from them at least. |
