Silverchair - diorama (very orchestral and catchy, but also proggy in its progressions)

Agreed,I've just heard this stuff and it is definately prog  rock.Sort of a mixture of anything that was going on back when it was released;symph/hard/folk/psych...a little rough around the edges but good nonetheless.

I recommend DEAD CAN DANCE.

They are without any doubt in
My mind, the best Art Rock band I've ever listened to. The style is enveloped with in a new age, ambient/electronic, midevil, middle eastern and gothic sound that will captivate and mystify a lot of seasoned prog listeners.

Albums to get started on would be....

1) IN THE REALM OF A DYING SUN
2) ANASTASIS
3) THE SEPEANTS EGG

I'm currently listening to Moon Safari's The Gettysburg Address. An excellent live album from an excellent band. great symphonic prog with brilliant vocal harmonies.
 I also recommend Riversea's Out Of An Ancient World
it's in the way that you use it

i like alot of this Math Rock stuff it what ever they call it these days.....you know.....stuff with odd time signatures....which alot of prog stuff is to me....anyways.....and i apologise if any of these acts have been mentioned.....but these are worthy of a butchers......if some of these seem a bit too normal as it were and not proggy to you....then  i apologise....alot of these can be found on spotify or you tube.
 
Faraquet - 90's grunge scene meets odd timings.
Komrad - oxford band who are more metal but go off on some mad time changes.
Bubblemath - brilliant one off band whose album is superb
Diagonal - from brighton.....more your traditional 70's prog....had an album out this year which is excellent.....
Swans - the seer album......not really prog but have a wonderful sound of their own.......2 hours of feeling like you've been slapped in the face......hard.

If you like opeth's acoustic sound, pink floyd ambience and 90s alt rock you will like this band. Pretty good debut.

I recommend... Ars Nova. They aren't rated too high here on PA, but 'Goddess of Darkness' has some good tunes and it's worth a listen. For keyboard lovers, definitely. It reminds me of some Nobuo Uematsu stuff he wrote for Final Fantasy OST.

If you don't mind some Neo Prog than I would recommend Pendragon.
You mentioned Folk, so I would warmly recommend Strawbs for folk symphonic( although not with that Camel like guitars you were looking for but still beautiful).
More recommendations would be: Polish band SBB and also PFM of course.

Thanks for the replies! I checked out the Vanilla Fudge song. I like it, but it isn't exactly what I'm looking for. The early Genesis stuff does indeed come close, appreciate the recommendations. More is always welcome!

Especially relatively unknown bands like Kaipa and Leb i sol are appreciated, who use a lot of folkish melodies played with guitar combined with prog arrangements. But also bigger bands like Focus and Camel, who do this thing a lot too.

Leb i sol is a great band indeed. Especially their first three albums: Leb i sol 1 & 2 and Ručni Rad are worth checking out.

HI EVERYBODY! I am new on this site. Just one recommendation. Thanks to MART219: never heard before LEB I SOL from Mcedonia. Whoever loves prog-psych sound of the latest '60s and early '70s, try this band from Madrid named SHOCK, recently disocvered and edited by spanish label GUERSSEN. From hearing these songs I think you would really appreciate Vanilla Fudge, especially their track 'You keep me Hanging On.' Also, early Genesis would really agree with you I think.

they really do hit you deeply with their lyrics. The music definitely has a lot of feeling and charisma to it. Pretty unique stuff if you ask me. FOOLS OVERTURE certainly has that characteristic as well.
