Great call, Sventonio! I can't believe how much the male vocals sound like Vander! Nice sinister sound mixed with the early jazzy Magma elements, good female vocals, oppressive bass. Some freeform bits that give the band their own style as well....all good!

Very nice stuff. One foot in the Berlin School/Tangerine Dream door, but very much a modern sounding album, lots of little bits that remind of The Orb, even Steven Wilson's Bass Communion work. Some of it even sounded like a floating modern-day video game soundtrack. Nice and mysterious, just melodic enough, never too dark.

Man, I just noticed the alien on the front cover too.....sweet

Baishui City of Lost http://baishui.bandcamp.com/album/city-of-lost

图片
With the success of four neo-folk albums released during the past five years, Baishui is now always recognized as one unique figure in Chinese indie music scene. However, as an open-minded artist who’s inspired by genres range from modern jazz to progressive-rock to minimal electronic, Baishui is certainly not satisfied with this “south-western China ballad singer” stereotype. After the first attempt towards more experimental music, instrumental album “A Travel Book”, this year, he’s totally ready to cast aside remnants from the neo-folk period and open up a new chapter with his latest work, City of Lost.
As a concept album, all movements in City of Lost are connected and integrated by a 70’s progressive-rock texture overall and an oriental (this time not only Chinese, but also Indian and Mid-Eastern and India) musical gene on the inside. Though different movements are presented with different music elements, some of which can be too experimental for most people, it’s still easy to recognize any one of them as Baishui’s work. Despite the fact that this highly intellectual and comprehensive work can be confusing for some who are more familiar with his previous works, City of Lost still holds the same impulse and beauty that can reach out to every listener, including those who don’t know the origin of all these music elements in the album. To certain extent, using the international language, music itself, as the only language in this album, City of Lost can actually be easier to perceive for people who don’t understand Sichuan dialect, which was adopted in all his folk songs before.
From what we’ve been heard from Baishui all these years, City of Lost may not be the best that an ambitious and talented musician could do, but it’s definitely a high light among recent Chinese independent music releases.
