Hereafter.

This one kept my attention the entire time. Simply put, it is a story of three paths that crossed each other with one man's blessing ... err ... curse. Now, the story flows nicely, though it is quite incoherent: certain parts of it have little to do with each other. I guess that's just how Eastwood wanted to make his drama - as dramatic as possible ... and it worked. It may have caused the incoherence but it was also the reason why the film was so attractive!

The Amazing Spider-Man

Surprisingly good version of the classic character's origin with a thoughtful script and humble, believable performances from an excellent cast, particularly newcomer Andrew Garfield who gives one of the best youth performances in years.  Better in many ways than any of the Toby Maguires.

Saw this one again here the other day, and it might just rank as one of the most overlooked masterpieces of modern day cinema:

With a terrific cast, Gilliam allures you into a strange metaphysical world somewhere in between Mann's Doctor Faustos, Narnia, The Divine Comedy and a frightening demented caricature of Disney with a splice of Bill Burroughs and of course the odd encounter with the man himself Tom Waits. This is great storytelling on acid.

Skyfall.

Meh. I thought it was blah. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either. Not as bad as The Man With The Golden Gun, but not as interesting and intense as Casino Royale. Same old Bond cliches: a couple of hot chicks, gadgetry (only this time it was very minimal!), and a very well-funded villain (with a rather poorly developed character where nothing stands out but arrogance) with an "army" of his own. Nothing really novel in this one. Nothing really satisfying.

One of those films which comes out of nowhere & blows you (well, me, anyway) away. Low budget independent film, but great performances from all involved, clever story (the soul of a small girl being fought over by those who bring you good dreams & those who bring you bad ones)... somewhere between Hellraiser, Alice In Wonderland & a really weird dream after too much cheese at bedtime. 100% recommended

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Absolutely terrific fantasy about a young Abe seeking vengeance for his murdered mother and learning how to slay the undead while studying law.   Fun, perfectly written, and done with complete faith in its subject, AL:VH is easily one of the best action flicks of 2012.

The Dark Knight Rises

Staggeringly good third and final chapter in the Bruce Wayne story with a pumped-up Tom Hardy throwing a hobbled Wayne around like a garbage can.   It really doesn't get any better than this, and one can only hope the Robin follow-up will be as compelling.   My only complaint is that some of the dialog is so textured and stylized it can barely be heard.

The Hobbit - Excellent. Once more P. Jackson improves upon Tolkien's slow prose (though less so here) making a great almost-three-hour movie out of approximately a third of the original novel. It belongs exactly in the same world as LOtR and Jackson makes sure everything feels like an "Episode 1" for the later trilogy. The script adds things the book doesn't have that make the link between it and LOtR much stronger. I loved the movie. For me the only weakness is th abuse of the deux ex machina resource, but that's hardly Jackson's fault, since Tolkien's novels of Middle Earth are full of last-minute saves by some all mighty power. 8.5/10

Pretty darn entertaining if inflated look at a small group of male strippers in Tampa.  Good performances, provocative, flamboyant without being stupid.  At least not much.

the hobbit is really really good action wise and good settings and props. was my favorite lotr movie for sure so far.

The Bourne Legacy

Serious and sober fourth go in the Bourne series with Jeremy Renner (Avengers) as another rogue CIA assassin beginning to break away from his handlers and in quest of a physio/cerebral enhancement drug.  In the tradition of these films, this one continues to evolve both the production style and story arc, and though it has a unfortunately abrupt ending is still one of the better in the sequence.

^ Saw it a few months ago. Thought it was OK. Yes, as you said, the ending was abrupt. I just found it confusing.

I'm pretty new to the "Bourne" series, but I saw the Bourne Legacy you speak of, and I was thoroughly entertained all the way through.  I need to get into more of those.  I have a hard time watching at home, though, with too many other distractions (e.g. internet) making it hard for me to follow the story.  That's my fault.

Turns out there is a whole Jack Reacher book series, and my stepfather is currently on his third from the series. So, this one is based on one of those books, One Shot.

Jack Reacher.

Just what the TV trailer described him as: part Dirty Harry, part Jason Bourne. Unfortunately, some hype and slightly poor script-writing (well, ... on a few occasions) bugged me if not really sickened me to the stomach. Overall, the film was quite a hoot, but America can definitely live without it. Is the movie a waste of time? I would feel pretty ambivalent about saying "yes". Besides, I think I gotto give it some points for originality. This isn't just some average actioner, and that's for sure.

WARNING: I've seen the movie in Spanish. No subtitles, no nothing. 

So, the Spanish folks definitely know how to make a good thriller/(horror) film. Make it a MATH thriller/(horror) film. Points for originality and for the intense plot ... even though I don't speak Spanish. Therefore, I'd like to keep it a three for now.

Clint Eastwood's 1982 attempt at adapting the Craig Thomas spy novel about the theft of a secret Soviet warplane.   Rather good first half has Eastwood a nervous, green new operative in Moscow but degenerates into a cheap action flick with bottom-basement effects and bad dialog.
