![]() I didn't know that Talk Talk was considered post, I like a lot of what I heard of them. I kind of get what you mean about Sigur Ros, they are certainly bleak and yeah, I get the feeling that they're trying to convey. Sadly, I balked at the vocals as well.

Yeah, congrats Tom! ![]() As to post-rock in general. I tried Godspeed, I tried Sigur Ros, neither did anything for me. Though, like Tom, it was quite a while ago (10 years or more!). So maybe I should pull those out. Talk Talk, on the other hand, is excellent. Spirit of Eden is a great album that I just listened to again recently. Very good Autumn/Winter album for me. I'm not sure they really fit the post-rock genre as it's known today, but they certainly seem like they were one of the inspirations for it. I don't have any of their other albums, but there is one other (their last one) that is in the same vein as Spirit that I think I will have to check out soon. Their first couple albums were 80's synth-pop so avoid those (unless you like that sort of thing, I guess). |

i revisit the post rock stuff every once in a while. after a while i'm just bored. i'm trying to look at the best PA albums of 2012 and i already have the ones i want. i just need to stick with the good stuff...pretty much TFK related.

RE: Jonsi, yeah his vocals are a bit annoying. it's a made up language too. incidentally, that movie about sigur ros is pretty awesome. i love the icelandic landscape...just so open and grey, yet warm. they're a poor country but don't they have the highest ratings in life satisfaction etc.?

No, Iceland is a pretty affluent country. Wages are high but prices are high too. I think the standard of life there must be pretty satisfying.
We're going there on holiday next year, not been for a while but as their currency has devalued considerably hopefully the price of a beer will have come down a bit since last time ![]() |

Yes definitely avoid the first 2 Talk Talk albums like the plague. However The Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are superb. I think it's safe to say the latter two are regarded as the starting point from where post rock emerged. I've not heard any other post rock albums that are remotely near as good as those two. As I say though, I really enjoy Sigur Ros too. Musically they're fantastic. |

Thanks Gus
![]() I second Roj's "The Color of Spring" recommendation. I have a bunch of their albums and while I actually enjoy the schmaltz of the early releases, I can imagine that it's not a huge appeal to everyone. The Color of Spring is a rather melancholic and melodic (see, two big M words there) sprawling release. A lot of lush keyboards and atmosphere.

"Post Rock" ?? Not sure i'm liking that anything with "post-" in front of it is almost certainly arty farty Physics envy - i.e. post-modernism...God Speed lured me in with humingously long track lengths....I was horrified when I played the two CD's i'd purchased...still they're in my collection.....
Finished work today for the end of the world on Friday........thats it - definately not bothering to have a bath till then - what would be the point.........
I am liking progressive metal at the moment - and hey - for those who don't like the lyrics of TCOT - just play the instrumental version - it rocks.......

I'm generally not into anything with "post" in the sub-genre name. As far as post-rock goes, I tried Godspeed You! Black Emperor, didn't like them. I tried Sigur Ros "()", listened to it 3-4 times, didn't not like it, but it never captivated me. I don't think post-rock is for me, like black metal, or "post-hardcore" kind of music.

After all this time, I finally understand the greatness of Retropolis.

Good man! Still my sentimental favorite of all Flower Kings albums. Though personally, I still consider it their best in terms of consistency and brevity (it was the shortest one, until Banks came along). Of course, Unfold is still their masterwork in my mind, even if I like it just slightly less (probably because it is their longest album by far....especially my copy which has the bonus track Too Late For Tomatoes). Retropolis is just such a diverse album I think. It's got a good cross section of all Roine's main influences (at least, what I think are his main influences). |

That's exactly the same as my experience with post-rock. Except that I got Spirit Of Eden a few years later, and love it. If you get a chance, check it out (listen first, of course). It took me a few spins, but it's minimalist approach and extremely broad dynamic range won me over. The great vocals helped as well. |

I'm not much into post-rock or post-metal but I like Battles quite a bit. You might want to check them out.

Keep pretension out of progressive music that what I say.....
And I've got too much symphonic progressive rock to check out yet before I would even dream of listening to Talk-Talk.......I thought they were new-romantic ... or is that post-romantic

Just the first two Talk-Talk albums are 80's cheese. The last two are quite far from that, and quite beautiful music. Not symph-prog by any stretch, but quite different from those first two albums. |

You know, for a moment I thought you said 'Beatles' and not 'Battles' and I thought to myself . . . no Sir, The Beatles are not Post Rock!
I reread. |

I totally agree. Talk Talk were my favourite band of the 80s. I saw them supporting Genesis at the reunion gig in 1982 and they got horrendous treatment from Genesis fans thinking that they were some kind of Duran Duran wanabees, How wrong could they be? I also saw them in 1986 on the Colour of Spring tour and it's one of my top 3 concerts of all-time. Incredible. They were the most truly progressive band of the 80s in my opinion and certainly influenced the likes of Radiohead and Elbow.

The first album could be considered synth-pop but the second one - It's My Life - is already showing more maturity. There are some great songs on that album and I would recommend it. Colour of Spring (the 3rd album) is probably my favourite album of the whole decade. Truly beautiful stuff. |
