I haven't been listening to much symph prog lately, (mostly Frank Zappa and jazz) though I've been keeping my eye on the TFK Yahoo group, and any Transatlantic news, but today I felt like putting something on, and i put on The Flower King. I'm starting to think that that album beats most other TFK albums. It's moved up on my list of favorite TFK albums.

Darkshade!!

so, you've been listening to zappa.  wouldn't have figured that :-)  i'm curious, what zappa?  zoot allures is my go to zappa album these days.

as far as the flower king goes, good call.  love that album!  i've actually only had it for a year and i still listen to it regularly.  lots going on there that is not initially heard.  some classic melodies too.  i need to listen to meet the flower kings to see how they do humanizzimo.  haven't heard that in a while.

Everything on Meet The Flower Kings is breathtaking. They perform Humanizzimo really well, with Daniel on vocals during certain sections. The other epics are great and are slightly different than their studio counterparts, espeically GoD.

Oh yea, I love Zappa, I have been listening almost non-stop for the past month. I like pretty much everything, but my favorites are the rock/prog/jazz/fusion stuff. His entire catalog got reissued and many of his albums have been restored to the vinyl versions on CD for the first time, so everything sounds a lot better, since Zappa added reverb to some albums, or completely remixed them for some reason when his catalog was issued to CDs back in the 80s.

I like Zoot Allures, but it's nowhere near my favorite FZ album. Although, that one is one of the albums that got restored sound but I haven't got the reissue yet, so my opinion might change a little when I get it.

The Flower King is a really great album.  Not sure where I rank it but probably somewhere in the middle.  Roine's guitar solos on it are easily among his best, and the sound he uses is very different, more in your face or something (which I guess makes sense since it is the solo album of a guitar player).  Dissonatta is my favorite track, but they all have good elements.  I would say I prefer the live versions of Humanizzimo to the studio version though, by a good bit.

As to Zappa, I most enjoy the instrumental stuff, like Make A Jazz Noise Here, Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka, Hot Rats etc.  Though there is plenty of stuff with lyrics I enjoy as well like One Size Fits All (my favorite Zappa album, if I had to pick just one).

I actually haven't listened to any Zappa in quite a while, I'll have to pull some out soon.

I really love Roine's solo in Magic Circus of Zeb. Gives me chills how well he works the whammy bar on that one.

I recommend checking out the new reissues, unless you have original vinyls of those albums. For example, Hot Rats is now available as the vinyl version on CD for the first time ever... same with One Size Fits All, Grand Wazoo, etc..

In fact, here's a comprehensive list (still being updated) if you're interested. http://www.lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/

glad to see the thread running again.  i've missed it.  the internet would be a total wasteland with out progarchives!

darkshade, i totally forgot all those zappa albums were recently re-released.  damn, i feel a zappa phase coming on.  i love Grand Wazoo, but have never owned it.  that might be my first purchase.  i'm envious that  you like so much of him.  i'm more of a fairweather fan...mid 70s.  i need to branch out.  i also forgot that he re-recorded some of his music in the 80s.  Studio Tan etc., if i'm not mistaken.  this is just another great selling point!

more about the Flower King later.  i've stayed up too late watching that sandy benefit.  clapton was great and roger waters was fun.

yeah, i love roine's soloing on flower king.  it's just such a revelation.  it's the album he'd been trying to make for a decade.  i love it all the way through.

i had meet TFK years ago and gave it to a friend.  never got it back.  i've got to get another copy!  another favorite zappa album is overnight sensation.  camarillo brillo might be my favorite zappa song.  those little guitar riffs are so good.  i also love this version of STINKFOOT!

btw, i really want to see zappa plays zappa!

Definitely see Zappa plays Zappa!  That is not to be missed.  It's probably sacrilege to say, but Dweezil's solos blow anything his dad ever did away.  But then, Frank never thought much of how own guitar playing and always said he was a dabbler in guitar, not a "pro".  Of course, there are some Frank solo's I would rank as the best guitar solos I ever heard, so I guess the Dweeze is not quite that good.  Mainly it's the fact that he has such great technique along with some obviously inherited talent at improving.

Regarding 'Zappa Plays Zappa' I'm seconding Gus' suggestion to see them.  I saw them open up for Return to Forever and they were fantastic.

I saw them when they opened for Dream Theater back in 2009, and they were pretty awesome. Don't expect stuff like "Dumb All Over" or "Broken Hearts are for a****les", but they play a lot of Zappa classics, and are pretty entertaining.

In regards, to Frank's guitar playing vs. his son's... Dweezil may have better technique, but Frank's playing was raw, emotional, and he was really trying to break the boundaries of what a guitarist could play. Dweezil is your run-of-the-mill 80s metal soloist playing Frank's music, with only an inspiring moment here or there. Besides, Frank was a composer first, and a guitarist second. And he admitted that he hired guys like Steve Vai to play some guitar parts that he knew he wouldn't be able to handle.

yeah, i missed them last time they came around.  they're on my list to see, along with TFK, of course.  seeing zappa plays zappa open for return to forever sounds so f'n awesome!!!!!!!!

i like dweezli's playing.  i wish he could pull together a fusion album or something.  he's one of those dudes that is technically amazing, but lacks in composition.  steve vai too.  they rock, but their compositions are not to memorable.  unlike zappa or stolt who are great composers and great players.

funny thing...tonight on the way home my son wanted me to quiz him.  so i asked him to name 5 rock artists.  he named Neil Young, Grateful Dead...Roine Stolt, Hasse Froberg, Jonas Reingold!!  I'm training him well.

The Grateful Dead is not an artist though LOL but he knows Roine and company, so it is a good start.

My problem with ZPZ is they haven't really expanded their repertoire, and have kinda become a very glorified Zappa cover band.

It was Craig.  It was my birthday / father's day present to him, I took the two of us, drive, paid for everything.  It was his present technically, but you know, I really really enjoyed giving it to him . . . ;)

i was so surprised to see RTF tour again.  i wish i'd had the cash to see them live.  that must've just been so amazing.  i also wanted to see that mclaughlin/corea band that came around a few years back too.  they played a really small venue here.  oh well.

@darkshade-Wink
as far as zappa goes, yes, they do seem to have a fairly regular setlist.  that's why i haven't gotten their dvd.  i don't want to spoil it for when i (hope) to see them live.  they need to go nuts and tour Joe's Garage at small bars!  and then encore with G-Spot Tornado!

Dweeze is FAR better than you are describing here, but I agree about Frank's playing.  Dweeze has come a LONG way since playing on that Don Johnson album back in the 80's WinkLOL

Well to be fair to ZPZ, it's not the easiest material to learn and play well LOL  They are probably the best Zappa cover band, at any rate.

hey, do you guys like any post-rock stuff?  i had a stint with tortoise and the the like.  that was years ago.  i have been enjoying some of the drone type stuff lately.  Stars of the Lid is a favorite.  actually more like Eno ambient stuff, but all done on guitars.  they slow tape down and stuff.  i'm going to check and see if they are on PA.

also, saw a mention on the yahoo group that a US tour is pretty much in the works.

I tried Godspeed once or twice, I own Lift Your Skinny Fists . . . I love the title of the album, sadly, the music itself didn't leave quite as much of an impression on me, though in fairness, it has been a few years.  I should probably give them another whirl.

Hey Tom, I see a little change there my friend.  Big congrats from me on your promotion to the ranks of Collaborator.  You'll do a great job on the Neo Team I'm sure.  Well done Clap.

On the question of post rock, I've always been a huge fan of Talk Talk ever since the mid-late 80s.  I always thought them to be slightly prog even back then, well before the term 'post rock' saw the light of day.  Their last 2 or 3 albums are amazing works that I still return to, although you definitely have to be in the mood for it.  I have a few Sigur Ros cds too.  The vocals annoy me a little at times but their music is wonderful.  I don't know if any of you guys have had the pleasure and delight to visit Iceland, but if you have you'll know what I mean when I say never have I heard music that reminds me of anywhere as much as their music reminds me of their homeland.  Awe inspiring, desolate, stark and beautiful.
