Pierre – the duck that never rests!

THE PLEASURE MACHINE : EXPRESS (1970)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbCIDrIuUMs - Man, what a groovy instrumental track! Real strutting kick to it, kind of jazzy hard acoustic sound! Very original and inventive, LOVE those crashing drums throughout as well! Man, that piano in the middle is killer too!

GLI ALLUMINOGENI : ORIZZONTI LONTANO (1970)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeKa3weY_HI - Great pop song with heavy organ, the song sounds very similar to the first Yes album. Big crashing drums again! Such confident and forceful vocals too.

GHOSTS OF NOTTINGHAM : MOONCHILD (1974)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY3ZRjaPPpY - WHAT A PSYCHEDELIC KILLER, just listen to that distorted sexy guitar!! Gorgeous flute and bass, terrific confident drumming too!

SCORPYO : DESTINAZIONE INFINITO (1971)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_Juor2xTRY - Bit of a lost classic this one, so many ideas. Some of it reminds me of a more sinister Pulsar/Novalis. Impossibly heavy, gothic and dark, wild male and female vocals too, they sound possessed!

FILIPPO TRECCA : COL FIATO IN GOLA (1977)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xinm3J4GluM&playnext=1&list=PL84D2DBF5696787F0&feature=results_video - Kind of a loud, dramatic and heavy orchestrated instrumental. Again reminds me a little bit of Delirium in parts??

LYDIA E GLI HELLUA XENIUM - INVOCAZIONE (1973)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0jV12GJKjo - I prefer their other track, but this is still good, with devilish female vocals! Wild and crazy track, very intense!

I FLASHMEN : NON SEI SOLO (1971)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEmMiUsmLTo - Nice thick production, massive guitar and floating organs, strong vocals - and that rapid-fire race ending! What a great tune! Another lost classic!!

So many great choices, my friend!

Yep, Pierre, give me just a few days! I'm adding tracks to two folders - one for vocal tracks, the other for instrumentals!

Some of them will be repeats of your choices, but that's because they're so good!

Mad Puppet King Laurin And His Rosegarden album coverEven though this is listed as Neo-Prog, I just discovered this band from Italy on another forum thread.  Mad Puppet, King Laurin and his Rosegarden.  Very nice concept album.

^ That was excellent!  Had not heard of them before.  That song had a tad of Genesis-Marillion feel to it with beautiful acoustics.  Thanks Jim

Re: Fancyfluid, "The Coming"

I like the instrumental segment from 3:52 to 7:27. Reminds me of the early stuff by Lands End with better bass-playing.

Can I ask you guys...

How do you feel about Italian prog bands/artists that sing in English?

Jim, I know you don't like it when they do so, and I have to say, even though I don't speak the language, it makes the music sound so much less special to me too. I think it then lacks a lot of the identity that's a trademark feature of RPI albums.

I know only a small amount are sung in English, but is it generally look down upon when they do so?

I'm not a big fan, I don't mind it - but strongly prefer the original language. Actually, same goes for any band from any country Smile

For me language is the heart and soul of RPI.  RPI with a vocalist using English (too often quite clumsily and/or with thick accent) is basically like Tofu-Turkey on Thanksgiving, or eating non-fat ice cream at a real ice cream parlor.  Why bother?

I have read that some Italian vocalists think they are being hip by using English, that there is some kind of cool factor to it.  If this is what the younger musicians there believe, it's a tragedy as far as I'm concerned. And it's false, singers....you don't sound cooler in English, many of you sound terrible using it.   I read recently that the famous Italian universities are going to begin switching their classes to English, for economic reasons.  Just tragic.

I'm not a fan of globalism at all, I like different countries to have unique and exciting cultures, language, art, commerce.  I want different countries to look different, sound different, be different, that is the spice of life!   I have the feeling that someday in the distant future travel will pretty much be moot.  Languages, culture all blending together, the same chain stores everywhere, and 98% of the world speaking two languages.  Sounds awful to me.  I don't like French bands using clumsy English either.  What would Ange be without that experience!??   So yeah, I won't be buying many albums where the traditional language is cast aside for the hope of more sales, or because the singer thinks he's being cool.

Sorry for the soapbox, but it's a pet peeve of mine obviously.  Christ, imagine your very favorite RPI album with English vox.....sacrilege!.......LOL

I very much agree with what you've said, Jim (hi! long time no see! :D). The first and last RPI album with English vocals that I've listened to was Latte e Miele's Papillion. The horror... ;__;

I think it's one of the best albums ever came from Italy. And the only album by I NOMADI which could be considered progressive.
Songs of one of the greatest Italian singer-songwriters Francesco Guccini in beautiful arrangements by Vince Tempera (ex- IL VOLO, long time Guccini collaborator).

In my opinion essential for everyone interested in Italian rock music.

Gene!  I just scored a copy of this for $4.99!  I'm so happy, it was the last one at that price.  Otherwise the Amazon price is $28.  Now it was through a private vendor on Amazon, so until I have it in my hands.....I"m not counting my chickens.  But hopefully it shows upBig smile

Good deal, Jim. Thumbs Up
Please share your opinion here after listening to the album. It's always interesting to know what other people think about your favourite music - does it click for them or leaves them cold or whatever.
Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why... (D. Gilmour)

Oh, I didn't think you were on a soapbox, Jim, just very passionate!

In the 70's bands like P.F.M, Le Orme etc were attempting English albums in an attempt to break into an international market, which I kind of understand, but it is a shame. As you said, usually the English itself is terrible, and it becomes painfuly clear that the vocalists probably don't even know what they're singing! It usually comes across as laboured and awkward, and it really robs the music of the more lyrical qualities.

The English vocals were one of the reasons I've so far decided to skip the `Court - Twenty Flying Kings' album. A friend ripped me three tracks, and although the vocals were actually of a very high quality, it still lacked the identity and character I've come to expect from the RPI genre.

I think it's also better when a prog band kind of `knows their market', and should realise that making ill-advised changes like discussed above in the hope of a commercial/top 40 breakthrough is probably not on the cards!
