I thank y'. I owe it all to rampant alliterate bouts of foolish youth and McCarthyism. There was supposed to be a comma between rampant and alliterate but I refused to place it there on purpose.
How is it that I love cowboy western songs but hate cowboy western movies?

I would say this is a thread for generally serious talk but look at what's happened the last pages I have spent way too much time online anyway today. Finally gunna go outside at 7:30 at night. Hit the gym, then finish my night reading more political philosophy to drive me nuts.

That's why I'm here. I'm PA's version of the rubber chicken slinging knight.

Sounds kind of similar to Rand's beef, except for that God part.

I don't buy it. I tend to think Hayek was right in The Fatal Conceit about collectivism being an instinctual relic from tribal society. Collectivism works great in a group of ten or twenty people, but fails miserably when you try to extend it to several million.

Yeah, you'd figure the mass collective would break down, lose sight of the group totality, form conflicting subgroups and then slowly develop clashing ideologies to suit. Kinda like today. Seems our minds don't work on such massive levels and are, so far, designed for compact 'visible group' processes. Which is why, it may explain, the family unit has garnered such vitriolic following in the past. The more independent we become the smaller our subgroups need to be to exist within current boundaries and structures. I'm no sociologist, though.

Oi, your lack of effort is painful man. Really it's just sad now Speaking of Rand, I did read Anthem. Gotta agree, her physical writing is, well not very good. The idea was fine and all, but I'm reading "We" know and honestly, it's the same thing but that was written 17 years before Anthem. By a Russian as well, not saying anything but...well I'm saying it It also is much better written. Yeah llama, it's more intriguing than anything. IDK if he means a literal death wish...maybe more of a "death of your individuality" thing. I just was intrigued that I noticed I've been worlds more content, and less angry, in recent years. Had the shift in political outlook, chicken or the egg? I just wonder if pessimism (to be simplistic) is the psyche behind collectivism, the want to give up your individuality (and others) says something about something. IDK it's whacky sh*t

Most of the classic dystopians just stole from We.

What blew my mind was the whole science aspect of it. How science was the justification behind the dystopia. I'm not one of these anti science b*****ds, despite what a few want to think, but can't help but notice "science" is the rationale behind a lot of big government, or the general "correcting our mistakes". Feels very we-like. And whenever one of us has a casual objection, it's completely lol'd at and ignored since we're some "anti science cavemen"

Yeah, I liked the idea of Anthem more than the application of We, but I prefer the application of We more than the application of Anthem, if that makes sense. At any rate, Anthem is the only Rand book I really enjoyed. I can't believe I was able to survive reading Atlas Shrugged. Seventy page radio speeches and an ending that basically boils down to a sort of 'Objectivist A-Team'. I pity da fool what supports de Altruism! And breaking into facilities guns a-blazing and all. Whew. B.A. Taggart.
I took a shallow crash course into dystopian fiction (I even read Jack London's The Iron Heel). Sure, most dystopian writers took liberally from We and The Iron Heel. I can't remember too much of Koestler's Darkness at Noon, but I remember enjoying what I did read.

No doubt that modern Statism was propelled by academics and breakthroughs in science. Of course, the whole science can solve all of society's inefficiencies is decidedly anti-scientific and dripping with hubris of the most self-interested sort.

Indeed Dusty. Hey, we all gotta steal from somewhere! I guess I can't accurately judge, not having read yet, but I can't agree with the whole greedy/altruism thing. I support individuality and limited gov and all, but I personally can't say Altruism is stupid, (even if "technically" it is) and greed is good.

I find that a lot of anti-religious atheist folk I know hide behind the banner of 'all-powerful omnipotent science' to justify their mean-spirited criticism. To me it was never 'science knows everything' it was 'science is a tool we humans use to further our understanding and progress technology'.
But maybe I'm a stupid backward inbred hillbilly imbecile.

Yup, I believe you told me you semi sorta kinda are cool with a limited government? So yes, you're a stupid inbred hillbilly. Eh I won't go in the whole religious thing, nor is this the place. I will agree though about Science. And I think trying to know everything about and "fix" humans and society is anti-human. What's the point of living then?

There are a lot of objectivist ideas that my heart agrees with on some levels (and as many or more it doesn't). I think that when some people criticize Ayn Rand they misunderstand her word usage. When she said 'Selfishness is a virtue', I highly doubt she meant 'Screw you, I got mine'. I think she said that a millionaire who spent his life earnings on his sick dying wife in hopes of curing her and spent so much he lost everything and became destitute would be considered selfish in her eyes, and therefore virtuous.
I think I'm one of the only people I know that would claim Ayn Rand as being somewhat communistic. When I read her work I get all sort of ideas from it all. None of them equal out to 'Screw you, I got mine' or 'to hell with helping people' or any of that.

Hmm, I really don't have the will to plow through the 1500ish pages that are The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged so I'll take your word for now I'm not shocked though, people do misinterpret and I love how everyone seems to hate Rand. Maybe I'm wrong but have that many people read her? Whenever anyone says "lol Rand is for 13 year olds" they are mindlessly ripping off Paul Krugman anyway.

I don't worship her writing. I don't worship anybody. I do like a lot of her ideas, though. As for reading philosophy, I'd rather they implement their beliefs and concepts into a story rather than plaster it all in a big list.
