Name as many albums as you can that have a high rating (9.0 and up) on Pitchfork.com that are influenced by Krautrock, Jazz, and Avant-garde?

I can name five that have a perfect score: Kid A, OK Computer, Daydream Nation, Loveless, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

BONUS: Name as many albums as you can with high ratings (9.0 and up) on Pitchfork.com that are about detachment, alienation, an existential crisis, or depression?

I'm not sure how to go about this.  I feel like I'm supposed to think of them off the top of my head, but in order to know which albums are rated highly on Pitchfork, I'll have to look at their list first.   Sakes alive, I'm torn.

I think I get your gist, though... how Kraut, Jazz and Avant are more prevalent in the hipster anti-prog environment than most people are willing to admit.  But wait, Kraut has always been cool with the hipsters.  And jazz? Always.  Avant garde?  Depends I guess.  But in theory, yes.

Just thinking aloud here, because I like the topic but can't think of another way to reply to it.   I have strong emotional ties to some of those "classic indie" bands like Sonic Youth, and I'm always on the lookout for interesting new music from independent artists, whether it qualifies for prog or not.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

That's definitely one side of the coin. It's also pretty predictable what artists and albums will be acclaimed among the Pitchfork folk. It's usually the same influences over and over. Don't get me wrong, I love all of the albums I've listed, but many artists that break the Pitchfork mold get mediocre reviews. A prime example is Midlake. They were all jazz students at NTU, but they've spent their career making music that has little jazz influence. Their highest rated is Trials of Van Occupanther which has a 6.8. Courage of Others, with extremely little if any influence of jazz/Kraut/Avant, has a 3.6.
