SUPERTRAMP are a wonderful crossover prog group that incorporate various wind instruments in their overall sound including the great saxophone, which isn't a common instrument in prog.

3 albums I recommend to get a nice definitive look at the incredible light heartily talented SUPERTRAMP, really is.

1) EVEN IN THE QUIESTEST MOMENTS( a wonderful album where the grand piano is featured so strongly.)
2) CRIME OF THE CENTURY ( probably their best album with a bit more of a serious feel at times)
3) BROTHER WHERE YOU BOUND? ( my favourite album and their most proggy album to date.)

So enjoy this terrific, classic band. And make sure to crank the music through a nice pair of headphones, so you can appreciate hearing every little nook and crany of instrumentation performed. Grab the remastered copies if you don't have one. I upgraded. They were dirt cheap. :)
Please recommend us something we don't know about ... something obscure, mayhaps. (I think) I made the same "mistake" the first few times I posted here.

Fair enough. They are fairly well known indeed. If its uncommon that you want; then uncommon you shall have.
No problem.

If the people on the forum are cool with it, then I should be cool with it.

You have a valid point, many people here have heard Supertramp, but some might not have heard all of those albums (I haven't) or the band itself, is all I mean.

They are not that we'll known to the 30 year old of today. It's a generational thing, but their music really stands the test of time through their remarkable innovation with kind of an eclectic/ pop jazz sound that is sure to please a lot of people. I think they are a good edition to any prog collection.

Agreed, Supertramp really wrote some interesting songs.  Even something as seemingly banal (through constant repetition or otherwise) as "The Logical Song" is actually a very deep, resonant song with great chords and lyrics.  I'm not really a lyrics guy normally, but their lyrics really stand out for me.

they really do hit you deeply with their lyrics. The music definitely has a lot of feeling and charisma to it. Pretty unique stuff if you ask me. FOOLS OVERTURE certainly has that characteristic as well.

Hey everyone,

I'm actually looking for some recommendations. I tried to open a new topic for this but for some reason it gave me an error. Anyway, here's the deal...

I'm looking for prog bands which sound similar to the examples I will give below. Basically these are melodic/symphonic or even jazzy prog bands, but I'm looking for the distinctive feel and atmosphere I get from probably the guitar melodies combined with keys in the back. It somehow gives me a nostalgic feel and speaks to my imagination. I hope this doesn't sound too vague, but here are some examples:

I hope this kind of shows what I'm looking for. Now I'd be very thankful if someone could recommend some similar bands/albums.

From hearing these songs I think you would really appreciate Vanilla Fudge, especially their track 'You keep me Hanging On.' Also, early Genesis would really agree with you I think.

HI EVERYBODY! I am new on this site. Just one recommendation. Thanks to MART219: never heard before LEB I SOL from Mcedonia. Whoever loves prog-psych sound of the latest '60s and early '70s, try this band from Madrid named SHOCK, recently disocvered and edited by spanish label GUERSSEN. This is SOME of the few songs charged on YOUTUBE by the fans!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr4BIarkkSA.
ENJOY IT. A real milestone..............

Thanks for the replies! I checked out the Vanilla Fudge song. I like it, but it isn't exactly what I'm looking for. The early Genesis stuff does indeed come close, appreciate the recommendations. More is always welcome!

Especially relatively unknown bands like Kaipa and Leb i sol are appreciated, who use a lot of folkish melodies played with guitar combined with prog arrangements. But also bigger bands like Focus and Camel, who do this thing a lot too.

Leb i sol is a great band indeed. Especially their first three albums: Leb i sol 1 & 2 and Ručni Rad are worth checking out.

Check out Sanhedrin for melodic symph prog...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7aW5u57jgc. There's also their whole album on utube.
If you don't mind some Neo Prog than I would recommend Pendragon.
You mentioned Folk, so I would warmly recommend Strawbs for folk symphonic( although not with that Camel like guitars you were looking for but still beautiful).
More recommendations would be: Polish band SBB and also PFM of course.

I recommend... Ars Nova. They aren't rated too high here on PA, but 'Goddess of Darkness' has some good tunes and it's worth a listen. For keyboard lovers, definitely. It reminds me of some Nobuo Uematsu stuff he wrote for Final Fantasy OST.

If you like opeth's acoustic sound, pink floyd ambience and 90s alt rock you will like this band. Pretty good debut.

i like alot of this Math Rock stuff it what ever they call it these days.....you know.....stuff with odd time signatures....which alot of prog stuff is to me....anyways.....and i apologise if any of these acts have been mentioned.....but these are worthy of a butchers......if some of these seem a bit too normal as it were and not proggy to you....then  i apologise....alot of these can be found on spotify or you tube.

Faraquet - 90's grunge scene meets odd timings.
Komrad - oxford band who are more metal but go off on some mad time changes.
Bubblemath - brilliant one off band whose album is superb
Diagonal - from brighton.....more your traditional 70's prog....had an album out this year which is excellent.....
Swans - the seer album......not really prog but have a wonderful sound of their own.......2 hours of feeling like you've been slapped in the face......hard.

heres a few tracks anyways

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S8n5PI5y_8 - Diagonal track ( superb instrumental this one)

hopefully you may like at least one of these.Smile
