This, Echolyn was also good. But, my two favorite albums this year didn't make it to the top 10; Astra's "The Black Chord", and TMV's "Noctourniquet".

Like Tom i only have three(the same three as him) and likewise vote Anglagard.
I've got Enslaved on the way which i've heard a couple of songs off of and really liked what i heard. |
There are also a few great releases that haven't appeared on this list ; TFK's 'Banks Of Eden', Astra's 'The Black Chord', Beardfish's 'The Void', even Hidria Spacefolk's 'Astronautica' which are all tough contenders for being a fave release of the year 2012. Mellotron Storm has impeccable taste for sure

its a good album for sure but so far this year I've only heard one album that I can get really excited about and that's Anathema - Weather Systems. There have been a lot of solid releases in 2012 of which the Marillion album is one. If anything I prefer the Steve Hogarth /Richard Barbieri side project 'The Hand Not the Weapon' but both are very good (4 stars imo)

Weather Systems is one of my favorites too. It paints a very special picture for me musically. 4.5 out of 5 just because it sounds the *slightest bit over-produced.

There have been some great releases this year, but Weather Systems is first by the width of the universe. I got the vinyl edition last week, so immersing.

Big Big Train gets my vote, simply an outstanding high-quality album , it really picks up where Genesis left off with `Wind and Wuthering', while adding enough of their own unique flavour. Superb vocals, lots of variety, catchy terrific arrangements and playing.
Having said that, the new Magma is a delicate and classy effort, the Anglagard album is very decent too.
But damn that Corvus Stone album is a killer debut with a million ideas - too many in fact!

Wow. Good to see that Corvus Stone have been found. I just wish we had released it much earlier. There just hasn't been enough time for people here to get to know it like other releases.

I've only heard two of the above albums in the list. One by a band I've been familiar with for quite some time and who I consider to be a favourite of mine. Another by a brand new band who very much surprised me and came from leftfield. Both releases are excellent. Magma's Félicité Thosz is perhaps disappointing in its length but I do enjoy it nevertheless. It's a far more relaxed piece. I've heard many live versions of it before but the studio release adds higher-fidelity and they've certainly extended and improved the piece since it's first conception. So it's great to have it on record finally. Hopefully Sl*g Tanz is next. Corvus Stone's debut self-titled album is fantastic and very much impressed me. It's still sinking in though and with further listens I can definitely see it being a future favourite. Compared to Magma it most definitely isn't short. All 80 minutes of the CD are filled and no track is really alike. The musicians are all fabulous too. I am very glad I got to hear this album and also very glad I heard it before the end of the year. The only real reason I voted for Magma was because I've had the album longer and so I'm more familiar with it. However, everyone should definitely check out Corvus Stone's debut. The CD packaging and music is fantastic. All the guys in the band are highly talented and thoroughly nice people too. I most definitely look forward to hearing the follow-up. I know there's a lot more music in them yet.  I should check out some of the other albums on this list too. I love Anglagard's Hybris so I shall check out the new album and I've heard great things about Motorpsycho and they're one of those bands I've been meaning to check out for a while.

I was disappointed by the new Anathema, it felt like We're here Because We're but not near as good IMO.

I own all but Threshold and Nine Stones Close--though I've heard these two--but am only really familiar, so far, with about half. Catch me in a few weeks and, hopefully, I'll know them all pretty well.
My gut tells me that, from this list, English Electric, Part 1, The Death Defying Unicorn and One Eye on the Sunrise will vie for my vote, but know that my Top 10 will look quite a bit different from this one.

I also can't believe The Mars Volta's new one "Noctourniquet" has been criminally overlooked on PA since it came out. There's been very little discussion and hype surrounding the album from what I've seen, yet I've found it to be one of the most original, and progressive, albums to come out in the last few years. I think it may be more progressive that the band's first 3 albums too. Besides that, the music kicks ass. They really make you think "Is that the guitar playing, or the keyboard? Hell is that even guitar or keyboard?". The drum patterns are pretty sick too.
The Flower Kings "Banks of Eden" is really enjoyable, and should be in the top 10. It was for a while, but it has slipped down a bit.
