There are so many bands to explore in RPI, but it won't be effective to list all my favorites so I will just name a few if your interested. The must have by my taste are:

Cervello
Biglietto Per L'inferno
Locanda Delle Fate
Osanna - Palepoli
Picchio Dal Pozzo
Semiramis
Reale Accademia Di Musica

Will do!Smile
excellent suggestion. I would add also the GONG's flying teapot trilogy.

For Zeuhl I suggest starting with Xing Sa, Eskaton, Setna, Eider Stallaire and Universal Totem Orchestra which are probably the easiest to approach, before getting on Magma, Shun-Niggurath and so on.

I've actually listened to the teapot trilogy. Good stuff. And I actually couldn't get in to Zeuhl until I listened to Magma and Dun, oddly enough. Who needs accessibility?LOL

No, I'm just not terribly familiar with their music.  Can is one band that I do know; I like them, and plan to explore more of their catalog.  I'm sure I'll get around to listening to more Krautrock some day.

Amon Duul II's Yeti is a good entry point.

Just finished listening; loved it.  It reminds me of something I would hear on 88.1 KDHX, my local independent radio station.  Raw, immediate, and idiosyncratic.  I liked it more than Can, actually.

... and while their other notable albums are of somewhat different character, you might want to give those a listen too.

While most would probably disagree with me, I think Banco is a better introduction to RPI than PFM or Orme.   They just have a pinch more of that saucy Italian vibe Heart.  And better vocals.  Big smile

The most popular groups in a sub are not always the 'best' to start off with. PFM is the most popular RPI group and Sigur Ros is the most popular Post Rock group, but while I like both RPI and Post Rock I never cared for those two groups.

Agreed. Francesco Di Giacomo has a fantastic voice. Have some opera with pompous music. Smile

Canterbury, Neo, Electronic I should look into.

Zheul, Krautrock, Indo, and Avant-prog will probably never click for me though. :(

I doubt that. K-rock is so versatile.

You should check out Shakti from Indo. It's a side project of John McLaughlin and simply amazing.

Never listened to any prog electronic or krautrock, and only a tiny bit of avant/RIO.  Most of it just grates on my ears.
I've recently decided to explore zheul.  Magma isn't really doing it for me, though.  Are there any other bands in the genre I should try before calling it quits?

Math Rock. Does Zappa count as part of that genre?

Currently Zappa is in RIO/Avant.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
