Michael's completely random RPI pick of the day lol!:

Quella Vecchia Locanda - Sogno, Risveglio E...

The somber yet thoughtful piano, the eerie violin, the reprise of themes from earlier on in the album...

But I REALLY love the final minute or two, with those dark strings and sinister mood. Nice vocals too here. The piece reminds me a little of the Museo Rosenbach album?

As much as I love the second Quella Vecchia Locanda album (which seems to the considered the better of the two), that first album is one of my favourites!

Wow Jim, lovely cover - and of course I jumped for excitement when I saw the mention that's available on vinyl!

Is this already out, or due to come out soon? Opinions if you've heard it?

Greg Walker's latest update showed up too, and amongst his new LP's was a reissue of the Italian `Janus - Al Maestrale' vinyl (lovely cover on that one too!), which I noticed you gave a 3 star review. It's $35 US, do you (or anyone else on here!) think that's it's an album worth bothering with for that price?

Michael, I think it was due out in Dec, but I've not heard the album so I can't comment on the music.

Re Janus, it would be worth it to me if I were a vinyl collector, but I can't answer your question because I have my own reasons and they aren't about the "quality" of the music.  I like the rare, underground, little known bands....to me things like Janus or Paciana Story et al are more exciting than having the big "important" bands.  I don't know why that is, but I adore that stuff.  Is the music worth $35?  I think most people would say no but for me I would buy something like that before I spend money on some new Banco reissue.  Smile

Thanks Jim, I'm very curious about that Janus album! As I think I've mentioned before, I kind of like looking into the more `unloved' albums that need a bit of attention their way, so I might give it a shot! I won't be finalizing the order for a few weeks yet, so I'll keep it in mind.

I definately have these recent Italian albums put away ready to go - although I don't think any of them are typical RPI albums:

ALTROCK CHAMBER QUARTET - SONATA ISLANDS GOES RIO - Chamber rock quartet of violin, cello, clarinate bass, flute & piccolo of transcriptions of music by Fred Frith, Univers Zero, Thinking Plague and others.

MATERYA - CASE (DIGIPACK) - AltaVia offshoot of beuatiful female vocal-fronted symph/prog. Fans of Magenta, Karnataka and Renaissance will eat this up.

SUBTILIOR - ABSENCE UPON A GROUND - Areknames offshoot but unlike Areknames this is a mix of RIO, Avant Garde & classical music. For fans of Univers Zero and the likes

Those are Greg Walker's descriptions too!

Thanks for that Carnasciala clip, Pierre (that cover is very familiar, I wonder where I've encountered it before?), I'll check it out when I wake up again in a few hours! I love your random and endless variety of suggestions and Youtube samples!

Michael, you should be able to find a youtube clip or two with the Janus music, to determine whether you want to go for it, pretty sure they had a coupleSmile

Yep, there 3 samples on our artist page....and I think Mats probably has some clips too.

I said in my review that the production is bad, it was recorded in 6 hours......and still I enjoyed it.   But like I said, if you follow my taste you might get burned.  I like a lot of "underachiever" albums as much as the high class stuff.  Wink

1) Here's a cantautori's gem from the 70s:

Roberto Vecchioni - Velasquez (from the album Elisir, 1976)

2) A relatively unknown jazz-fusion work (from Neaples) by drummer Tullio De Piscopo:

Rettifilo, Ora di Punta (from the album Sotto 'en Coppa, 1975)

^ Great links Andrea, thanks.  The Roberto Vecchioni song was wonderful!

The Quella Vecchia Locanda - Sogno, Risveglio E posted above by ABB was absolutely gorgeous!  I have not gotten anything by them yet.  Saw their other album on the tube, I will have to give that spin when I get time.  Thanks.

Since we brought it up, I have a Nina Simone - In Concert recorded in 1964. Essential Simone stuff!

Yes, It makes me think that  there's a deep soul feeling in many RPI's albums. Showmen II, Delirium III, JET, even in Osanna's Palepoli in some ways.
