Hi Aussie. I have not heard La via.But heard the samples on I-Tunes,but it didn't turn my crank.I am an I-Tunes shopper and that was where I came across Aldo,by listening to the track bits. You are right about the great cover, but that does not make me want to spend big bucks on it. Now that I am here.If you know anything else like the Aldo album that you can recommend, please let me know. I like prog pop Italian style, very much. Not too keen on the all whacked out stuff. All the best.

Coasterzombie is becoming quite the good source for RPI information
Celebration 1972-2012 Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) Rock Progressivo Italiano Review by coasterzombie — First review of this album —
It's hard to provide an objective review for retrospectives like this; I hesitate to use the term
"compilation" because that's really not what Celebration 1972-2012 is. Included are PFM's
first two albums wholly, and a bonus disc of previously unreleased "Road Rarities" which
will be the main attraction for collectors. The discs are packaged in a nice DVD-sized
hardcover book with 62 pages of pictures and concert posters...I cannot comment on the
text since I don't read Italian fluently. The presentation reminds me of Yes' The Word is Live
set from 2005. But the extravagant packaging does not justify the purchase of the contents
within: Most PFM fans will already have copies of Storia di Un Minuto and Per Un Amico,
and the Road Rarities disc leaves much to be desired. For this reason, I can only
recommend the set for collectors, and really just completists at that.
Premiata Forneria Marconi released two amazing albums in 1972, and both are included here in their entirety. Unfortunately, the mastering used is a victim of the "loudness wars," and both discs are practically unlistenable. Compare an early RCA CD pressing of Per Un Amico for instance, to the Sony/BMG version used here, and you don't have to be an audiophile to tell that the latter has been completely ruined - the sound is harsh, trebly and completely lacking in dynamics. Just listen to the beginning of "Generale" as the splash cymbal distorts - the song is totally lifeless and actually painful to listen to. This might be okay to have in the car or at work, but in any serious listening environment will be immediately revealed. The Road Rarities disc touts itself as containing 12 unreleased live versions spanning 1972-2012...this is somewhat deceptive as there are really only 8 songs, four of which are indexed in such a way as to separate the intro and main song. Not only that, but the vast majority of tracks are from 2001-2010, a period that has been amply covered in other releases. The lone exceptions are a 1985 take of "Impressione di Settembre" featuring a very interesting interpretation of that classic, and a live rendering of "Dove...Quando" from 1997 which sounds like it was recorded in a coffee shop. Neither of these warrant purchase of this set; interested parties would be better suited to purchase songs a la carte if you can find them (www.play.com in Europe has digital downloads for sale, for instance). Overall, I can't figure out who this set is intended for or what it's purpose is. The whole package feels like a cash grab on behalf of Sony, as they try to milk every last drop of a dwindling CD market. The better release may actually be the vinyl box, as LP copies of the first two albums are exceedingly hard to come by. But again, any serious fan will already have the vast majority of content here, and neophyte listeners will be better served to purchase titles individually. As superfluous as this box set is, I just can't bring myself to rate it only one star, as even for $35 it is a nice conversation piece and will look good on the mantle shelf. |

G8Dane, `La via Della Seta' is actually a decent album, it's just that it's not really recognisable as a Le Orme album, especially due to the absence of Aldo's vocals. He was replaced with Jimmy Spitaleri of Metamorfosi on this album, and although he does a decent job, he has a very pompous and kind of stuffy grand voice.
`La Via...' IS, however', a perfectly decent Italian progressive album on it's own. All the usual traits are there - grand symphonic sound, darkly classical elements, inventive soloing, passionate vocals. It just sounds a little anonymous. So everything is in the right place, but just lacking that real Le Orme magic. As for a decent prog/pop crossover album, Pierre recommended the second self titled `Ping Pong' album a page or two back, and I gave it some positive feedback too soon after! I think you may enjoy that one! JUst ignore the band's rubbish name! Edited by Aussie-Byrd-Brother - November 20 2012 at 17:09 |

Heading off now to see Italian band Goblin, responsible for one of my favourite prog albums, `Roller'!
For those who haven't heard this wonderful instrumental album, here's the title track: Goblin - Roller (track 01) and here is the second track, with a mighty David Gilmour-style guitar solo!: Goblin - Aquaman (track 02) Apparently Claudio Simonetti will be using a proper booming church organ, so hopefully I can take a few pictures to share with you! |

A rare and great one, composed in 1978 by Cipriani, but played by Goblin.

Is Goblin in Australia?? Either way, I envy you. At least I got to see Daemonia ten years ago. The next best thing, but I'd prefer to see Goblin, even if Fabio's not playing bass anymore.

Nice blog. I love Frizzi's soundtracks for The Beyond and Zombie 2. The former is an all-around great score, and the latter's main title is an infectious ditty. |

Hey everyone!
OK, the Goblin concert last night was terrific!! A good mix of tracks from several of their horror soundtracks, and (hooray!) three tracks from one of my faves `Roller'! I had no idea Massimo Morante was actually such a good player!! He just tore through the set, had so much youthful energy and honestly was like a piercing David Gilmour! Keyboard player Maurizio Guarini was very subdued and restrained, just letting his tasteful playing speak for him. Claudio Simonetti was endlessly smiling and having a great time, bouncing arounding and dancing! His keyboards were just as good as Maurizio's, and he also utilised the enormous pipe organ in the venue, which he said was the first time in their career that they'd ever used such an instrument to perform some of their tracks. Drummer Titta Tani and Bruno Previtalli were also excellent, bringing a youthful energy to the band and real professionalism. I have a few fairly lousy photos, but I'm sure there will much better pics than mine over the next day start showing up online. and someone just put up this one on a Facebook page this morning, which is far better than any of the ones I took! It also gives you a good idea of the pipe organ that Claudio played on: When I get the setlist I'll post a longer review in the `Live Performance Review' section of the Archive forums (and post a pic or two of the support acts) and I'll link to it here. |
