I cannot get all the hints, but some of them are explicitly pointing at Michele Ferrari of EPO fame.

That’s the man! The first hint should be pretty obvious, the second is more cryptic. Ferrari comes from Ferrara, an important center of composition for the lute in the renaissance. The juicy hint is explained in the Wiki article, Post means U.S. Postal Service, Gewiss is another team that "benefited" from Dr. Ferrari’s expertise, and the friend is Lance Armstrong. Well done!

I found the US Postal Service, but at first I thought of Peter Post, who led or advised the Raleigh, Panasonic and Rabobank teams. I identified the friend: the astronaut was not difficult, but only now I know that Louis is the musician. The Lute hint I could not find. On to the next one: Real person, Male, Deceased.
