Thank goodness. Okay, so we have a Swedish non-metal band putting lyrics to and recording an older song by an unknown composer.
Could the band be described as playing folk music? |

Not entirely correct: The tune (I don’t think the composer is unknown, I just can’t find his name at the moment) and the lyrics (written by a very well known Swedish poet and bard) existed long before the band. You may call it a kind of "cover".
It’s not folk. |

Alright, I am going to try to find the poet and hope that leads me to the song. Was the poet born before 1800?

He was. So if you found a recording with him, it would be quite sensational.

Does his last name start with a letter contained in the set A-L?

No. Actually Lucidor is mentioned in another song by the same poet/bard, so you’re quite close now.

No. This person is far more famous. The Dubliners have also played some of his songs (translated into English).

He may be famous to the Swedes, but to me all I see is a long list of people with funny names born in the 17-18th centuries.
Gustaf Filip Creutz? Wikipedia says he wrote the most admired poem in the Swedish language. |

Not Creutz, but a contemporary of him.

Is he on this list? Because no one on there is listed as having been alive at the same time as Creutz (and fitting the rest of your clues)

It’s unbelievable – he’s not on the list! But he is on this one:

Yup, it’s Bellman. A really great poet.
As you can see, he wrote a lot of songs. Now to find the right one … |
