Are you referring to one of the earliest one? That was Zappa. We’ve had loads of others since then.

If we were still struggling with Zappa after 300 pages, we’d have to be pretty thick …

Did he have anything to do with the reformation?

Even though I don’t understand all the hints, it looks a lot like John Calvin.

Hm. I really thought I had him. What about Michael Servetus?

No, not Miguel Servet either. He headed a refugee church for a short while.

William Farel? Still I can’t sort out all the clues, but the Nero one could be this: The heartless cruelty of the minister Farel, who accompanied Servetus to execution, is enough to make one's blood run cold at the bare read- ing of it.§ 8th. The year after the execution of Servetus, in 1554, Calvin published his famous work '• de Hereticis Puniendis,^'' in which he justified the whole proceeding by the authority of Scripture ! W^as this man sent to reform the church of God ? He was worse than the caliph of Geneva, as M. Audin calls him — he was a very Nero !

No, not William Farel either. When he married for the second time, he must have been about 50 years old (or maybe older) while his bride was not older than 17.

I was in Switzerland while this man was in Scotland, though he met Calvin in Geneva. It’s John Knox, isn’t it?

Can you explain your sixth hint? Charles V is obvious, but I haven’t deciphered the rest.

You found him at last. It is indeed John Knox. The sixth hint: John Knox compared the Pope with the Antichrist. On the papal crown (tiara) was written "Vicarius Filii Dei" (Viceregent of the Son of God). The letters I have written in upper case represent Roman numbers (I=1, U,V=5, L=50, C=100, D=500). The sum of these numbers is 666, the number of the beast.
