Ah damn! I will have to check this out. I used to feel kind of bad for Paul. Over 30 years (hell probably even longer that was just in Congress) sticking to his guns and fighting the same fight. Has accomplished little in concrete terms. Used to wonder if it hurts him. But I'd like to hope that at least he's content with recent influence from him. The fact that people knew him at all was something, let alone talking about him/his beliefs. Even if there was a lot of bullsh*t going around at least people were thinking/discussing the Fed, gold standard, things we never would. Hell I only knew of the Fed in name, and that they did stuff with the economy, until he got me interested. Sad to see people like him and Kucinich gone. Love or hate we need at least a few people with real beliefs that hang with em! Edited by JJLehto - November 14 2012 at 18:57 |

Good, thanks. Think I read you survived the storm relatively intact? I've been pretty sporadic here as well, trying to maybe be more regular. |

He will be missed. I wish he was 40 years old again instead of 75 or whatever.

Pfffft everyone was freaking the hell out unnecessarily. Well unless you live along the coast, but besides that it was just a freakin Cat 1. FL gets like 5 of those a year Not to downplay those that did get badly affected. Naturally, you were one of the few people I liked here! |

Wish they had locked all the other members in the room for this. If only he were giving this type of speech as an inaugural address or state of the union.

Brief essay on how restrictions against so-called "price gouging" creates a black market that is worse for the buyer than if the free market had been able to run its course.

Indeed. Also wish it were shown in every high school classroom and cut into American Idol, just as a brief moment of equal time. |

I actually heard him give a speech in person tonight (granted it was a fundraiser and a lot of Tea Party people were there), and it was actually really good. Thomas Massie also had a speech that was quite good (another really young pseudo-libertarian guy), and Mitch Mcconnell was....well, I won't go there with that one. I will say it was interesting being in the same room as both of my senators and congressional representative. I also got to meet Paul afterward. When I told him he and his father were big influences of mine, he was like "Oh, you don't want me as an influence! You want a scientist or an Edison kind of person." I understand why so many libertarians have been wary of Rand (believe me, I was in the same boat for a long time), but I really think we need people like him and Massie as the future of the Republican party moreso than people like Rubio and Ryan. I can honestly say he's converted me. Of course, it might just be because I feel like he's on CSPAN giving a speech on the Senate floor all the time, so maybe it's just me. |

I'm even more wary now that I hear he's recommending Edison as a positive influence. |

I read that article about the libertarian republic. But tell me, how is it that sales taxes (a horribly regressive form of taxation) is voluntary, but income taxation (a much fairer form of taxation) is involuntary? I already know the answer the libertarians would give, that a person can simply choose not to buy anything, thereby avoiding the tax. Well, a person could also choose not to have any income, thereby avoiding an income tax. Both must be regarded as either voluntary or as involuntary. To call one voluntary and the other involuntary is deceptive and silly in the extreme.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I ask you to consider that a consumption tax could replace an income tax. Exempt groceries and other necessities! Would you be opposed to such a plan? A family buys clothes and food = no tax. A family buys a yacht = tax. |

Neither are voluntary, but I wouldn't say the income tax is more or less fair. |
