Because cats always #include "satan.h" but forget to add guard blocks, so you end up with circular references to Satan, which spawns Chthulu and the universe gets eaten.

Good news: I purchased Mr. Bungle's California CD and listened to it this morning and actually enjoyed it.
Bad news: When I previously listened to Mr. Bungle's self-titled CD I really disliked it. After enjoying California I decided I needed to revisit Mr. Bungle's self-titled CD. It was not on the shelf. And it is not loaded in my iTunes. I swear that I once owned this CD, but can't be entirely certain, as I may have borrowed it from the library and disliked it then. Although I swear that I had purchased it. Ugh...

It's hard to imagine a band with more dissimilar albums than Mr Bungle. Their 3 albums sound like 3 different bands to me. The debut one really blew me away upon release, and it's still quite an eclectic shocker. Disco Volante still feels like a classic to me. But California just never grabbed hold of me. I seem to be the only fan who feels that way, too, making me feel as if I'm missing the point of it or something.\
Almost forgot, but they have a few other albums that predate the s/t one, and they are available for free download from the band's website. Of these, I've only bothered with "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny", the first one, just because I heard it was such a zany over-the-top death metal album (yes, death metal!).

I spent a good chunk of the 2000s listening to a really strange indie rock band called the Fiery Furnaces. I haven't listened to them much in the past few years, but I decided to give them a spin again today, loading up all their albums on the iPod. I'm almost inclined to suggest them for PA, but in my gut I know they'd be rejected, mainly because they don't "look" like a prog band. Image-wise, they more resemble a humbler White Stripes (brother/sister duo. But man, they put out some stuff that twists and turns and changes directions and tempos and lyrics that spin these surreal dreamlike fragments together. It's almost too much to take.

No I agree with you on California. I'm a big fan of their debut and a HUGE fan of Disco Volante (one of the most creatively brilliant albums I've ever heard), but California has never really clicked with me at all.
