No, not before 1500.
Even an Admin may give a hint.

Yes, before 1800.
He might have behaved like some kind of meteor, but he finally gave his name to an asteroid.

Aha! The "meteor" refers to the well known cannon ball story. The man in question must be Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen.
Richard is Richard Asher, right? I don’t know about Roy and the admin. |

Right ! Roy is Roy Meadow, the peediatrician who described the syndrome Münchhausen by Proxy in 1977.
The hint about the admin refers actually to Tony R's avatar. One of the Von Münchhausen stories depicts him sitting on the front half of a horse. Edited by someone_else - November 08 2012 at 06:25 |

I would never have found out about the avatar!
The next one is also male and deceased (and not at all fictional). |

This was an easy find, although nothing has been said about astronomy or a metal nose: Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), Danish astronomer.

I knew you would probably find him pretty fast, but I couldn’t resist making "entertaining" hints (it’s easy with a man like that). I love the tragic story about his moose. My next hint would have been: He went underground. |

Going underground to observe what is above: this is unorthodox behaviour.
