Agh here we go - Aus news flash come in now

Obama vows to move US forward

By Jane Cowan, Ben Knight, David Taylor and wires

US president Barack Obama has pledged to reach across America's political divide and seek deals on stubborn issues after winning a second term in office.

Mr Obama won at least 303 Electoral College votes and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney 206, with Florida the only state yet to finalise its count.

After a long, bitter and expensive campaign, Mr Obama delivered a rousing, early morning victory speech to thunderous applause from supporters.

He vowed to return to the White House "more determined than ever", saying compromise is needed to move the US forward from political gridlock.

I must admit this is astirring speech and very well thought out

Obama really touched many here as he focusses on the microscopic the average citizen rather than the macroscopic.

He is inspirational. Living in a solidly red state, I have witnessed some genuine despair today, both in person and on social networks, and I wish so much time had not been spent on demonizing. That is my greatest hope from this election: that maybe - just maybe - the Republican party will do some soul searching and maybe they will come to the conclusion that fear and hate is not the way to go, and maybe next election we won't have so many people angry with each other because of which political side they fall on. That is my prayer - that the wounds of partisanship would heal.

The Repub party peddles no more "fear and hate" than your own camp does.  You just choose to ignore it, and like many (not all) liberals, you demonize even as you decry tone.

Barack Obama Wins a Second Term.  Now What?

Neocons obviously need to be purged from the republican party but that will require a massive effort because the important ones are not elected officials.   The Bill Kristols and Karl Roves aren't going to go down easily and will use their media accomplices (O'Reilly, Hannity, Levin, Limbaugh, etc..) to divert blame.  They will pin it all on Romney who, in reality, is just another symptom of their disease.  Whether the rank-and-file will be able to see past the propaganda is yet to be seen but seems ulikely.  The other trouble the republican party has is it's still deeply tied to the religious authoritarians (who will likely blame mormonism and take this as a call for their beloved christian jihadist: Rick Santorum).

It drives me crazy when  side that win suddenly pretends to be all concerned about bringing people together.

"Now that the election is over, we need to put aside our differences and come together to solve problems" Translation: abandon your principles and do whatever our candidate wants because we won and you lost, nyah nyah!

Right, and let's not forget, this was a measly 2% victory.  No matter how big the electoral number looks, the fact is that the public was divided by 50-48%.    That's a win, no doubt, but it's not exactly a huge vote of confidence that the media is already rejoicing.

What makes me sad is that unlike many Libertarians here who I really respect, I do believe Romney would have been a better leader.  I think he's a good guy at heart and I think we lost a chance to restore something missing in this country-but I'm not getting into that.  I think the biggest loser was the media who have now ceded any semblance of objectivity, and the biggest winner Marco Rubio, who will be courted by a party who knows they have to embrace his more moderate immigration view.

The Repubs also have to figure out how to counter a party that promises goodies to everyone, goodies we really can't afford to promise, without looking like the Grinch.  They need to mend fences with Libertarians if they are to survive.  I'm not sure if that is possible but if Libertarians and traditional Republicans cannot work together, then both will get the leadership they deserve and our decline will continue.
