^ The title "frontman"/"frontwoman" is pretty ambiguous; is it the lead singer, the chief songwriter, or both? I know Annie was not a chief songwriter, though she did make some behind-the-scenes contributions to the band's work besides singing (to my certain knowledge).

Guldbamsen already named my two picks - Cos and Catapila are incredible and feature some fantastic female vocals. Curved Air are very good too.

@Dayvenkirq: I'm fairly sure frontman/frontwoman is exclusively used to refer to the lead singer of bands. I think it comes from the fact that regardless of who's actually writing the songs behind the scenes, it's the lead singer who's usually up front and in the spotlight live.

One of those unusually rare bands in which the attractive female singer also looks to be the most imposing regarding photoshoots.

The nerdy male musicians stay safely behind her as she snarls, "Don't worry boys, noone's gonna mess with you 'cause they'll have to get through ME." This would be followed by the boys' grabbing their calculators to estimate and deduce their chances for survival, and the results please them.

Good band too.

In regards to the wonderful District 97 and Leslie Hunt, I hope everyone has checked out the live DVD that comes with the first run of `The Trouble With Machines' album!

Man, she is tiny! But such a powerful voice for such a small frame, a cheeky sense of humour and a VERY tough personality! Her dodgy dancing to the tricky prog time signatures is worth watching the concert for alone!

Eclectic prog masters Sheshet have an outstanding woman vocalist. Vocals are in Hebrew though. A 70's masterpiece anyway.

Personally, I feel Nico could fit well in early avant folk, and her feminine slightly evil vocals are downright gorgeous. Try out The Marble Index. So far ahead of its time...

Mermaid Kiss - New album released just last month: http://mermaidkiss.bandcamp.com/album/another-country, the last to feature Evelyn Downing on vocals, who is now handing over to Bristol (UK) based singer-songwriter Maria Milewska.

I actually have not heard FLOOR with NIGHTWISH yet. I understand that she has joined a few shows that are left from the IMAGINARIUM tour. I bet she is great. Loved her on AYREON's 100001001"" album. Super clean vocalist she is!
