I can't hear my brain cracking though. Yeah, I probably never heard of the guy.

Is there only one "i"?

I am a little depressed about the election and it is past my bedtime, and also the letter guessing is getting tedious so I am going to give a couple of hints and resume this in the morning.

Hint 1: He has acted as producer for several popular alternative bands.
Hint 2: We have been discussing this as if it were a band, but he essentially acts as a solo artist, creating all the music on his albums himself. However, he records under various pseudonyms that would look like band names to anyone who didn't know better.
Hint 3: The album cover in question uses only black, white and red as colors.

None of those ring any bells.

Our clues are:
 - a very diverse American male rock artist,
 - has an article on Wiki,
 - not on PA
 - still alive, is an Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter,
 - born in '60,
 - he guest-starred on other projects,
 - has done soundtracks but not for films
 - best known only for his music,
 - not {blues, metal, folk, pop, classical, RIO/avant, jazz}
 - famous within only certain music-listening circles,
 - 80's,
   +: e i r
   -: n
   b c d f g h l m p r s t v w
   h t v w

Oh, so is he an alt/indie artist? Because if he is, then this is going to be way tougher than Will Shatner.

OK, since the letter deduction method is a butcher, I'm gonna need one more clue.

Yes, it's on a studio Foetus album. Hint: the album has a one-word, four-letter title.
