Our clues are: - a very diverse American male-led rock band, - each one of the members has an article on Wiki, - not on PA - the leader, who is still alive, is an Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, - born in '60, - he guest-starred on other projects, - has done soundtracks, - best known only for his music, - not {blues, metal, folk, pop, classical, RIO/avant, jazz} - famous within only certain music-listening circles, - 80's,
Were some of those soundtracks for films?

No, I'm pretty sure he has not done any film soundtracks.

Sch$%#e! ... OK. We'll do it the cheap way:
Does his first name have an "a" in it?

No. It is an abbreviation of a longer name that does contain an a, but he does not use the long form.

No. I am curious about what database you are using to narrow this down.

Since he is so hard to figure out in terms of musical styles, I have no database to use. Is there a rule that says I should use a database?

Of course you don't have to use a database. I just figured from your line of questioning that you were consulting a list of names and narrowing it down.
The last name is more than five letters.
