I was actually sure when I answered. After I asked if he was Norwegian, it struck me that he probably came from Iceland or Greenland instead, and your hints had told me that he was an explorer.

Next one is rather difficult, I believe: Female, deceased.

The hints about his doings were quite obvious indeed.
 
My hint concerning the place of his birth pointed at Greenland indeed. Iceland is for the most part European. The European and North American continental shelves meet at Þingvellir, some 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Reykjavik.
The line of the eastern coast of Greenland, from north to south, continues with the coastline of North America after the Baffin Bay.
